Lid support struts

Can you have too much output force (what Attwood is calling boost) My current rod locker lid springs are rated at 40lbs but can be ordered anywhere between 20lbs and 120lbs. The 40's are barely enough to keep the lid open and if it rains, with the added weight on the carpet, the springs won't hold the lid open. I'm wondering if I should order 60lbs, 80lbs, or even more. Thoughts? http://www.attwoodmarine.com/store/p...em-gas-springs

FWIW, mine are 50 pounds.

seems like a simple answer. If the 40 doesn't hold the lid up, get a stronger one. I doubt a stronger one is going to do any damage, if that's what you're worried about

Before I ordered anything I would speak to the factory. Maybe yours are rated for 40# but are defective Maybe the got a bad batch.  They would know if they have ever received this complaint and what the best correction is.

Just my lifetime of mechanics experience.

I ordered and installed the next size up. They have worked out just fine

Sometimes bigger is not better.  Common problem if you upsize the struts is that if you don't close and lock your lids they will open in rough water or when you hit wakes.
