Looking at setting up a frog rod and I was looking into a cheaper reel when I stumbled across a near new chronarch mgl for a fraction of the price. Wondering if it would make for a good frogging reel?

I can’t see why not, heck I’d get it anyway if it’s that cheap.

Nah, I'll recommend 2 of them. Lol. But in all honesty, if it's comfortable to fish with and has the gear ratio you desire, any reel would be sufficient. 

I currently have a Curado 200IHG on my frog rod, but last year I used my Chronarch MGL 8.1:1 on it for a while and yes, yes, very, very smooth and effective.  Love those micro gears.

The Chronarch MGL should work fine for frogging. It's not my ideal choice because it doesn't have brass gears, but it should serve you just fine.

Thank you everyone! Just wasn’t sure cause it’s so small and compact. I currently use one on my bottom contact/jig rig and love it. I was going to go with a Curado K cause I love that on my flipping stick but when I saw the chronarch for the same price it is hard to turn away from it.

Why do brass gears make that much of a difference?

 

Short term, no.

 

Long term, I believe yes.

I'm nearly 100% positive that the Chronarch MGL has brass gears

 

To the OP: yes, it can be used for frogging. I use mine on my jig rod, but both have definitely pulled double duty, and have done very well at it

Wonderful! Thank you. I was pretty sure they had brass gears too. I remember when I bought the reel the guy was pushing it for that reason.

The Chronarch MGL does have brass gears, the Micro gearing kind. Very smooth. I use it for frogging all the time. Nice thing is that since it's the MGL spool you can get away with throwing a smaller frog for those times that call for it. I rarely throw anything bigger now than the Spro Bronzeye Pop 50. I love that thing.

Why do brass gears make that much of a difference?

 

I've used by Curado 50E reel as a flipping/pitching reel in heavy vegetation.  Don't let the small reel size fool you.

Wow!  1/4 oz.  I couldn't cast that thing on my frog rod regardless of reel being used.  And that is big for you!  Double wow.  What rod are you using?

I'm using it on a 6'10" Shimano Zodias MedHvy/Fast rod with 40lb Gliss line. I've never had issues throwing it either, seems to cast fine.

Sure it's not going to zing as far as a Whopper Plopper or Spinbait 90 G-Fix....but most of my frogging is relatively short, but accurate casts anyways.

I live in Canada so my chronarch mgl I have now on my jig rod I paid 379.99 plus taxes so like 430 dollars which is regular price. The one I’m looking at now is 250.00. That’s cheaper then the Curado k, tatula sv or a *** as those where the 3 I was looking at originally for frogging reel. Just love my chronarch currently
