Vinatge Shimano reels questions

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

New to the forum, Been Bass fishing most my life in the upstate Ny. Round Lake is my all time favorite spot. Out here in San Diego, CA now. Fishing is ok.

Anyways I came across a few reels I'm not familiar with and have a few questions.

pretty sure there form the 80's never opened still in the boxes and plastic.

SHIMANO- GT-X2200SQ CX2000SQ CX2500SQ Anyone ever fished with these? whats your opinion? What would you say the value of them today in MINT condition may be?

Thanks Guys!

I can't say anything about the value because there's not a lot of easily accessible information about these reels, but I will say that when it comes to performance, almost anything in the current market will be better. From the little research I've done, these were fairly standard Shimano reels of their time, nothing fancy or exotic, and they all have rear drag meaning they suck to disassemble and repair.

I have some old Shimano spinning reels with rear drag and I use them for bait fish, and they work well enough. If I was going to buy a reel though, I'd go with something current.

It looks like SQ is the designation for the higher gear ratio (6.something : 1, but again this is with limited research so I could be wrong) so it's something to consider. If you're thinking about buying them and trying to flip them for profit, it's probably not worth your time. If you're thinking about buying them because you fished with similar gear as a kid and have some nostalgia, or if you've only fished with newer reels without the wacky rear drag and drag lever, you probably aren't going to get anything terrible. For that purpose, I personally wouldn't pay more than about $20 for one. I also don't know if the GT-X or the CX models were more expensive at the time, but if you can find vintage catalogs, you'd have a better idea.

Are these Japanese made reels? I have some older Shimano spin reels too. Mine are a little loose now after 20+ years, but they are some of the best Ive ever owned.

I can't help you with your reels but welcome to the forum.

These were my go to spinning reels thirty years ago.  Really neat that you have them brand new. Unfortunately I don't think there's really much demand for them. New stuff is way better for actually less money in 1988 dollars.  That's not to say they wouldn't serve well.  I sure caught a lot of bass on them.  One thing you'll notice is the lack of balance at the rotor.  Today's reels have no wobble at all.  Also, the spools aren't designed for braid.  The rounded edges beg for wind knots.  Everyone used mono then.

Misterdeadeye well said! I'd probably purchase a them just for collection purposes. They are still in the the box with plastic wrap on the them. Pretty cool ?

I definitely noticed the balance is off. If thought something bent when using it ?
