Question about Buzzbaits

Featured Replies

Can you use buzzbaits below the water's surface, kinda like a spinnerbait?  I have before and caught some large bass, but I was wondering if they where just luck fish, or if it is an effective way to fish.  Oh, if it helps, I fish a private pond, not a large public lake.   I thank you for all your help it advance.

I'm sure that will work! With a slow retrieve you can keep the buzzbait just under the surface.

If it works for you then do it! There are no rules! ;)

Ooh and WELCOME!

I've never tried that. But then again I do the same thing with a spinner-bait. It is called the 'Wake Retrieve'. If it will work for a spinner-bait then I am sure a buzz-bait will work too.

PS: Welcome to the board!!  8-)

ive always wondered about using buzzbaits under water. it seems like it would work and give off alot of vibration!

there is a new product made just for that its a terminator hybrid blade the blade on it is one of a kind and it uses a titanium spinnerbait frame and can be fished as a buzz or spinner try it its really fun to use

Buzzbait = Spinnerbait above water

Spinnerbait = Buzzbait under water

I have done this with great results. You can only fish a spinnerbait so slow, but you can fish a buzzbat much slower. Try a slow-rolling a buzzbait in the colder months.

Earlier this year we had some really warm days, but winter returned with full force. The bass were suspending near the surface, but topwaters weren't working and most everything was too fast. A buzzbait slowly retrieved about a foot below the surface was the ticket.

I think of it as a specialty technique. Usually something else will work better, but in a few situations it shines.

I have caught a fish once that way I just figured it was a suicidal fish it was purly accident I was fishing it that was I was watching someone else catch a fish and wasnt paying attention to what I was doing.

Last Saturday at a tournament - I pulled up on my first spot and started throwing a buzzbait - on my third cast, my reel looped out and I was readjusting it.  When I started to reel in the bass hit it before it broke the surface.  I thougt at the time, it hit it like a spinner bait.  The only fish caught on a buzz bait all day.  Go figure.

Welcome aboard!

Buzzbaits are designed to be fished on the surface, but there is no penalty for fishing any lure "another way."

Ain't that the truth. Don't be afraid to experiment with lures. I have had a blast using some lures in ways other people wouldn't think of.

I remember hearing about a pro BASS angler catching bass like that at a tournament and from what i remember it worked well enough to get him into the top 5.

Give it a try!

I have alot of success waking a SB so try a buzzbait and maybe you will have some more fish hit. I bet the strike looks great too.

It works, at least occasionally. It did for me at least, though the first time it was really accidentally (cast the buzzbait, cellphone rings, I answer and the buzzbait sinks - I try to bring it up and -boom!). I have since tried it a few times, with mixed results (sometimes it worked, sometimes it failed). It is always worth experimenting!

Just a side note, that propeller in front does generate quite a lot of resistance subsurface. At least if nothing works, you cast a buzzbait, let it sink, and on the retrieve you get the sensation that you are fighting a dink!

I just caught a bass the same way as well.  The reel I was using could not keep my buzz-bait above the surface without killing myself, I was going to switch to a new lure and bam just about 1ft under water caught 1 of 2 fish for the day.  Not a very good day of fishing, but I think it works!
