Swimjig

Featured Replies

Ok, I am so lost. I have a 4.75 inch soft bait trailer. What size oz swimjig do I use? 1/2 oz?

I choose the weight of the swim jig more on the speed i want to fish it. Heavier the jig the faster you can fish it; it has little to do with the size of trailer. In other words, i use the same trailer on a 1/4 oz. jig as on a 1/2 oz jig. typically in the summer months i fish a swim jig pretty fast, so 1/2 oz is standard. On swim jigs i use a shorter trailer or bite it off to the right length. I don't want it too far behind the skirt. When a bass hits it, i want them to get the hook and not just nipping at a long trailer.

Yes, it's one of the standard sizes.

jigs are so confusing to me. There are some many types.

That's why I only have two types, in a few colors each.  They seem to work just fine!

With swim jigs, I like to start light, and work up in weight as required. I'm usually throwing a 3/16 or 1/4, but will go to 5/16 or 3/8 if need be. I seldom go heavier, cause I find that if I'm fishing deeper, I can usually get them to bite a spinnerbait, which is essentially a swim jig with built in attractors and a wire weedguard (see "favorite/ most productive thread")

I stick with 1/4oz swimjigs as I find them to move through most cover far better then heavier ones do.  If I want to keep a paddletail deep I tend to go for a weighted swimbait hook so I keep it slow without worrying about snagging.

3/8 for one with a paddletail and 1/4 if using a small grub. Paddletailed baits are bulkier and produce more lift.
