Shakyhead or Texas rig worm?

Featured Replies

I've got a question I did not see answered in the articles section. I'm fishing from the bank on ponds and lakes where there is a lot of vegetation and was wondering would it be better to use a Texas rig or put the worm on a shaky head? Second question, is there a reason why I should not use a large worm like the Zoom Ol' Monster?

Thanks

I would rig your bait of choice Texas style, weedless.  Any jig head is going to get buried in the grass since you are on the shore and bringing the bait back to you.

Texas rig. Depending on grass thickness you may want to pin it

Just to be a contrarian... I prefer fishing plastic in weeds using a weighted swimbait hook.  I like the horizontal fall.

I t rig in thick stuff.  Not quite on the shaky train yet.  The swimjig idea is cool.  The old jigworm.

I use a shakyhead around rock.

Like everyone else said Texas rig in weeds.

The old monster works great in summer. Very good big bass bait.

2 thing different with big worms is,

1: I use a big hook. usually 5/0

2: you have to give the fish time to get it all in his mouth, before you set the hook.

I usually wait 2 or 3 seconds before setting the hook.

Often times if you set the hook instantly after you feel a bite, you will bring back 1/2 of a worm.

I would try both and see which one get you the most bite. It is also depends on how thick is vegatation in your Lake.

Weedless worm, sometime is harder to cast and won't get you any distance unless you use spinning rod, even that it might not get your lure down to where the fish at.

Shakey head, would be quite hard to work the lure thfru thick stuff, you would get frustrated very quick if you keep reel in grass after grass,

and also you might have some hard time detecting the bite.

Just this morning I caught one decent size fish with Zoom ol'monster on 1/8 slider head, but I've been fishing this weed pad for the past 2-3 weeks and used everything from mushroom head/ stand up jig/ weighted Texas rig and unweighted texas rig.

Doddle rig it with brass n glass. This was the shaky rig of the 80'-90's.
