There's a fairly secluded pond that I fish from time to time that has never produced a topwater bite for me, my wife, or a couple of fishing buddies. We've fished it morning, day, and night, and have never had so much as a swipe. The pond doesn't see a lot of pressure, and it has a good bass population in terms of numbers and size. What would cause this?

What kinds of topwater baits are you using?  Sometimes they will want something with a more subtle action such as a horny toad. Sometimes they want something that causes a ton of commotion like a buzz bait. Sometimes something in between like a whopper plopper.  Sometimes you’ll want something that stays in the strike zone for a while like a walk the dog or popper lure. Other times a wake bait that just meanders across the top.

Whopper Plopper, buzzbait, popper, Jitterbug, and frog.

 

Any other pond I throw a WP and it gets annihilated soon after the plopping starts. 

The bass made a pact.

 

Pack Leader: “If Glaucus pays us a visit, let’s all agree not to atttack top water lure, hee, hee, hee.””

 

Pack Members: “Yes, boss.”

 

Pack Leader: “Shhhh! He just arrived! Remember... Stick to the plan.”

 

On my home lake they seem to hit top water around the dock I fish in the fall. You might get one in the spring and another in the summer, but that is it. I think those bass also made a pact against me, lol. 

 

 

I have a simluar situation on a pond here in memphis.  The only topwater bite i have got was during  a high water period in the spring when i threw it way back into the bushes.  None since then and i have put some serious hours in trying to get one.  Maybe its just the heat and i will continue threw the seasons to see if thats the issue.  This pond is very clean compared to others in the area and that may be part of the issue but i have done very well in other states in water just as clear...

Unfortunately I don't have any advice, but I'd be interested to see what other people think about this. I've never caught a topwater fish in the pond where I fish. I've fished frogs, walking baits, buzzbaits, etc. for hours without a bite.  

I use to fish a private lake that got very little pressure, tons of fish that ate everything, except topwater. No idea why, never did figure it out, but I fished every kind of topwater I could think of, only kind that occasionally got bit was a toad or buzzbait if I ran it right along the edges of the docks. 

Good ole fashion Hula Popper or Chug Bug after dark on a full moon (July 27th, 2018 I think)....Chug and pause for 5 seconds....Chug Chug and pause for 3 seconds....repeat. If you don't catch one on July 27th with a Full moon on this technique, in an unpressured pond, I'd encourage you to never throw a Topwater ever again on that pond : )
