Quick Question about fishing line

Featured Replies

So i bought my GF who is trying to get into fishing an Ugly stick with a GX230 5.2:1 gear ratio spinning reel and it says between 4-8lb test

She is a girly girl and wants to put pink fishing line on so i'm thinking i can find some pink braid to put on it BUT i was told that i can put a little more lb test on a reel when it comes to braid? (The guy at dicks told me this when i was looking for fishing line for myself but i have never used braid and usally just go with what is suggested on the reel) So if he was right what LB braid could i put on her reel ?

Absolutely can use heavier braid.  Can also use heavier mono.  Listing is a guideline that tells you how much of that weight line the reel holds.  A lot of people use between 15#-20# braid.  I'm currently using 10# Sufix 832 on one of my spinning reels because it is a small reel with a very shallow spool.  The Sufix is equivalent to 4# mono.  10# PowerPro is equivalent to 2# mono.  A mite small for my eyes.

EDIT:  Personally I would go with 15# braid.

I'm using 18# pink Gliss with 8# leaders on spinning reels and absolutely love it.

Numbers on the reel are a VERY GENERAL guideline and tell you more about spool capacity than fishing utility.

So basically the consensus is 15# ?

Yeah - 15 should be perfectly fine. You could easily do 20 as well but I don't think I'd go above that.

Lb. ratings are very subjective.  18 lb. Gliss is smaller than 10 lb. Power Pro.  Diameter should be the determining factor. .15-.20 mm dia. is perfect.

30lb Sufix 832 braid has the same line diameter as 8lb mono. You can use 10lb to 30lb Sufix 832 braid on her set up. Although I'm not sure it comes in pink. ?

PowerPro, SpiderWire Stealth, Gliss, Ghotda, KastKing, Dorisea Extreme, Sunline Saltimate and Fins all come in pink.  I bought some Fins Windtamer in pink to try.

That pink color in the braid might eventually wear off and show as white, which should be an acceptable girly color.

I also wouldnt go higher than 20# braid which should have a mono equivalent diameter to 6# mono.

Lastly, give her fair warning to be careful freeing snags with only  just hands. Braid when taut can cut through skin like a knife through soft butter. Have a thick dowel or similar item (outside of plier jaws, is, when closed, also can work) to help free snags or break off when necessary.

Id put 8 pound braid on, well I do, and dont see the need to go over 10 pound braid just plain overkill and hurts casting.

There is never a "Quick Question" about Fishing Line ...... ;)

Do you cast braid just like mono or Flouro put finger over line free the spool then cast and move finger at height of cast  ? (With a spinning reel)

I believe the point the Dick's guy was trying to make is that you can get good casting qualities with higher pound test braid than you can with mono or  FC.  For example, I have trouble getting good casting qualities out of any mono or FC line over about 8 pound test, but can go as high as 30 pound braid before noticing a substantial reduction in casting quality.  I usually use 15 pound braid, about twice what I can get away with with mono.
