So that’s why the outboard wasn’t working...

Any guesses as to what’s wrong? ?

What does "not working" mean exactly ?

Won't start ?

Starts but won't stay running ?

Starts but runs rough ?

Runs but will not produce full power ?

Runs but smokes like a chimney ?

Starts & runs but runs cold - meaning it will not warm up to safe operating temp ?

Starts & runs but plays music - specifically the theme from The Jeffersons ?

My guess is either Runs but overheats and /  or starts but doesn't produce cooling water (no PP)

Because your Impeller looks like it might be a little toasted.

Somebody hasn't heard you should not dry start an outboard (that's why the tips are rolled as bad as they are) and you should change water pumps every three or four years, not every 20 - 25 years.  Looks like it's still the same OEM pump in a90's -2000's JohnnyRude.

That impeller has not made proper water pressure for many years.

Water pump housing has seen better days.

"Wasn't working" (as in, it wasn't peeing)?  Or "wasn't working" as in the motor got too hot and seized up?  If it's the latter, my condolences.

Yep, that impeller has seen better days.

“Wasn’t working” as in the buzzer went off and we decided not to run it until it was fixed.

It also wasn’t peeing, but that was probably a combination of the melted impeller and the dirt dobber nest. It also wouldn’t start back up.

It does work now that we’ve changed out the housing and impeller. ?

All your parts are on the ground, not on the motor.?

I once blew a motor in an I/O because the springs in the hose that intakes water to cool the engine gave out and the hose became constricted. Those impellers are rather important. In my case, the engine overheated. I didn't have a temp gauge, but the engine started smoking so bad that I thought it was on fire. Got towed back in. Got the hose fixed, just to find out the head gaskets melted.
