regestration decal removal

Featured Replies

I am trying to remove the old decals on my glass boat.  I just used the heat gun and the 'exterior' of the sticker came right off.  But these were decals with the silver metal flake in them and basically the metal flake stayed.

What is my next move?  I tried using a razor blade to etch or lightly scrape it but it didn't want to come up.

any ideas ladies and gents?

I just removed/replaced mine.  Got all the residue from the stickers off with a product called "Goo Gone".  There are similar products that are sold to remove stickers/crayon marks etc.

It did not leave any residue or dull the finish.

Shortbasser

Soft cloth and denatured alcohol.

Had good luck with that, I tried goof off on last boat and I think I rubbed to hard but it dulled the clear coat.

I tried WD 40 tonight - hardly budged the stuff.  This gunk is tough!  It is like part of the sticker itself.  When the letters went on, this was part of the letter.  After the heat gun just the top of the sticker came off had the black outline and it was clear!  It left all the metallic gunk still on the boat.

I am heading over with bug remover and some gasoline tomorrow night.

Thanks guys for all your help.  Still looking for the silver bullet!

You pretty much have to scrape the plastic outer off, just being carefull not to gouge the fiberglass.  Heat gun helps for that.  M.E.K solvent will take the glue off with little effort.   I would recommend using solvent resistant gloves when using the MEK.  Not that it's that toxic but is absorbed into the skin and long term exposure can cause kidney/liver damage.  MEK can be bought at Lowes or Home Depot in the paint dept.

"Goo Gone"

it works better than most and is much safer than most chemicals...

I used to work at a boat repair shop and the only thing that we found to work without damaging the finish of the boat was laquer thinner. It will soften the glue upi enough to scrape off with a plastic scraper. Then a quick wipe again will take all the remaining residue right off. ;)

Thanks guys!  I will be working on her tomorrow morning!  I will have to trail her down some dirt roads Sunday and I want to get that crud off before she hits the dirt roads!

Picking up a couple of the rememdy's at lunch today.  Most importantly a plastic scraper!

I will let you know how she goes!

Thanks again for all your reply's
