I used the forum resources to trade a reel for a bunch of lures.  This one that I got as part of the deal is awesome.  I've thrown it with a splitshot (for more casting distance as it is very light) and have caught Bass and Pickerel.  I've also caught Bass and Yellow Perch trolling with it.

 

What is this lure called - how is it classified?  Also, is it supposed to represent an insect that fish would normally eat?  If not, what is it supposed to represent?

Looks like a rebel crickhopper meant to emulate a grasshopper or other insect 

That's a Rebel Crickhopper. It is supposed to resemble a grass hopper. It's classified as a crankbait. Looks like it needs at least one new hook.

Thanks for the IDs.  The picture was taken at a bad angle.  I just checked and there are two sets of three hooks.

Rebel crickethopper and that pic is a sure way to break the ceramic in your tip eyelet.

I didn't realize there was any danger in keeping it so tight.  I just removed the lure from the snap-swivel.

You are pulling a metal swivel through a ceramic guide which isn't as strong. I did this years ago and the guide chipped and frayed the line which cost me a few lures and several nice fish before I noticed what was going on. Just figured I would pass on the words of wisdom so you won't make the same mistake I made.

Those silly rebel micros were a ton of fun and certainly caught fish.... man that takes me back. I might need to go order some
