Whats with these earthworm fishers???

Featured Replies

After fishing a ton this year iv realized a few things......

many fishers have no idea what their doing, even after fishing for 40+ years.....

and the ones that do know, still use real worms anyway?

I'm not trying to insult anyone who prefers live bait, but it just seems like the lake is for my taking when I go down and im the only one throwing plastics.....

people will be fishing for hours, and I come down, and after a cast or 2 with a senko or a kut tail i will have one.......and they all get ticked off......

Is this just the area where im from? it seems that everybody, even the guys that have "the fishing look" are throing little live worms with tiny hooks and bobbers??

they always wanna know what i use and half the time have never even heard of a Senko, also , they look at my 3/0 or 4/0 hook and act like im fishing for sharks....lol "THATS THE BIGGEST FRESHWATER HOOK IV EVER SEEN...."

Am i missing out on using these real worms? or am i right when i say these guys arent fishing for bass the way they should........

See, me, I NEVER use live bait, it seems to take out all skill and all stradigy......this is why im not a huge saltwater guy,

anyway, whats up with all these real worm/live bait users.....

Anybody out their care to defend live bait?

If your catching fish don't worry about it. To each his own.

Exactly.

I am not skilled in live bait fishing (yes, it does take considerable skill) for bass. When I was a kid and live bait was all I had to fish with, I would occasionally catch a bass or two.

There is a guy on here, FishChris, that uses live bait for some very big smallies/largies out in California. I think he would be qualified to attest to the ability of nightcrawlers and crawfish to take very large fish.

As with any technique, to become good at it, you must practice. A little success along the way helps as well...

to each his own, but i gotta say,

i saw a guy yesterday at marsh creek catch 2 ok sized with an earthworm setup......so i guess it can work

but a majority of the time i just feel sorry for the people......

like last weekend, i caught like 7 bass in 2 or 3 hours, which isnt amazing, i know, but before i started fishing i talked to a few guys that said that NOBODY ON THE ENTIRE LAKE has caught anything that whole day, and they were their from 9 am, i showed up at 5pm......

and I see their bait and I instantly know why

im the funny thing is, im usually the guy that doesnt get much, unless im by myself and really put some time in.......

i think i just recently mastered the art of the weightless senkio, MY FAVORITE LURE

I wouldnt feel sorry for anyone....they are out fishing (Marsh Creek is a beautiful lake), enjoying the scenery and experiencing the outdoors. They could be working!!!!   ;)

Just keep doing what you are doing and unless someone asks you to show them something different, let them enjoy what they are doing.

true,

thanks for the words.....theyre having a good time either way

The reason they might not have caught much is that either the bait isn't being moved from unproductive areas and that you are covering more water or the live bait they are using isn't the best for that water, the same as for artificials.

If you use sonar and know the structure you're targeting and they don't, they have no idea of how deep the bait should be unless they are split shotting.

If they've never watched fishing on tv or read any basic angler books, most likely they either don't know the specialty tools of the trade or don't really care and as long as it ain't work and are happy just to soak a few worms!

If you look back at your early years as a newbie, you probably remember how mysterious everything was when it came to artificials and finding active fish, but you still had fun. I didn't have a clue 30 years ago, but once I joined a club and took in all the media my brain could absorb, I found I couldn't go back to those simpler and less varied ways to catch fish. Am I a better angler than the shoreline angler who uses live bait? Only the fish will tell at the moment they see both baits, especially when ice fishing. ;)

Of course, keeping something simple is not always bad, especially if it's not the catching that's important.
