polyurethane problem

Featured Replies

yesterday i carpeted some of my boat deck but i forgot to coat it with polyurethane before i glued the carpet down. the glue is water proof after 5 days but now i am regretting not putting the polyurethane down. any pointers guys??????

See if you can take the carpet off without damaging the carpet. If you can't then it depands on how much glue you put on under the carpet wether or not it will keep water out of the wood. If anything you could put ALOT of scotch guard on it. Not sure if the scotch guard will work but it's a start

i put a very even but thin coat of marine grade outdoor glue. i dont know if that will waterproof it though. and im pretty sure the wood will expand due to lack of protection when it gets wet out. oh mannnnnn i should have remembered to coat it with the polyurethane!!!  >:o

Well looks like you migth have messed up. Take the staples off the back, assuming you put staples, and see if the glue gives a little bit. If it does come off, sand the glue off good and put some poly on there and you should be just fine.

Fiberglass, wood, or aluminum?  :o

Don't worry about it as long as it is stapled on the back side.  I replace my decks every 3 yrs or so, we get wear spots in certain areas and for $30 in carpet, I just make new ones.

The wood lasts alot longer than the carpet so you'll just deal with an extra 20 lbs of water in the wood or so,....really not a big deal.  Erics floors are not urethaned and they are due for new carpet this yr, I doubt he'll bother with the urethane again.  Mine are done so that's that but I won't be bothering with urethaning them next yr when I replace the carpet.

We also use a very cheap 3/8 cdx.  $15 to replace the whole thing.

Don't loose to much sleep over it.  The wood will outlast the carpet by far.  If you really want it done right cover the ply in fiber glass and it will last forever.
