Re: on board charger question

Featured Replies

I have a question for someone smarter than me. In my jon boat all I have is a 50lb trolling motor for strip mine lakes. my question is I wanna run two batteries for my tm. I wanna have plenty of juice. I bought a two bank charger and I hope I can make use of it. Can i just hook the two batteries up two the charger, and then do I just hook the tm up two one of the batteries and itll feed off of both batteries? If someone can explain I would greatly appreciate it. I searched but couldnt find anything.

Hope thats better.

thanks

I'm no expert but my boat has a a dual charger for a 24v system.  The charger has separate leads to each battery and the batteryies are also connected by separate wires in series to get the 24V.

I think you'll still have to use wires to connect your batteries post to post.  I don't think the charger in of itself will facilitate the running of two batteries in with parralell because they are on separate banks.

Otherwise if you had two batteries on for TM and one for starting the big engine and had them on a dual bank charger you could theoretically drain the both by running the TM.  That doesn't happen so they must not be connected through the charger.

Good luck :o

First, Long Mike - I do not believe this site is generated to criticize anyones grammar, moderator's please correct me if i am wrong.  If it were I could have a field day with your response.

Lowrider - I think i understand your question. If this is for a 24v Tm, one lead is secured on your positive post on battery A. The other lead is secured on your negative post on Battery B, then jump a lead from the negative on battery A to the positive on battery B. The charger should have four leads. These are to be connected to both positive and negative posts on both batteries. Hot Rod is correct, I would not use your starting battery as your second battery for your Tm. Please verify prior to connecting your batteries. I wouldn't want to be responsible for giving any wrong information.

you still need to conect the two batteries together. Your running in 12 volt, right?

just run a big gauge wire from the pos term on one battery to the other. and the do the same thing with another wire for the neg term.

The hook the TM up to one of the batteries

TM             Battery 1                   Battery 2

if i gather correctly,... you are running a 12 volt tm. you want to run two batteries, for extra run time. you hook up the charger per the instructions. you can then do one of two things. you can hook the tm up to one battery and run it til it gets low, then connect the tm to the other battery and continue running. Or (what i'd do) is to hook your batteries up in parallel, and run off that. As HPBB has suggested. You'll get better run time and better service out of your batteries hooked in parallel. IMHO. 8-)

thanks alot guys for your info. i didnt want to mess up my new charger and i wasnt sure how to run two batteries for a 12v tm. so if i do like HPBB said i just hook my tm up to the neg and pos on battery A and then i jump the pos and neg to battery B. then i just hook one battery up to the charger (not on the engine start bank). if i make the connections like this, the charger will still charge the batteries the proper way, correct.

thanks for your guys' info

Sorry for the bad info Lowrider, I guess i missed the 12 v vs 24v.

then i just hook one battery up to the charger (not on the engine start bank). if i make the connections like this, the charger will still charge the batteries the proper way, correct.

thanks for your guys' info

You'll still need to connect both batteries to the charger.  If i read you correctly.....  the jumper will not suffice for getting two batteries charged.

someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Welcome aboard!

Correct spelling and punctuation are not required on this Forum, but it helps!

yes connect both leads of the charger one to battery and the other to battery two. even thought it sayes motor start you need to hook it up to one of the batteries. 2 bank charger means one bank to one battery the other bank to the other  that is just telling you that if you had a starting battery you hook it to that lead, but since you don't it dosen't matter which battery you hook it to as long as each battery has its own leads hook up

tm              battery 1            battery 2                  charger

i know its not the best but hope you get it
