Trolling Motor- Rocks a bit

Featured Replies

My trolling motor rocks ever so slightly, and I have tightened up the main screws that hold it down.  It seems no matter how hard I tighten them, it still rocks.  Wanted to know if you have ever encountered this, and what solutions you may have used.  I bought the boat used, so install of trolling motor was before my time with the boat.  I guess I am just looking for a way to tighten up the connection between the trolling motor and the gunewall. (sp?)  Either way, thanks for the read.  I am always learning about my boat, and any information would be greatly absorbed, and appreciated.

I know when I istalled my TM there are rubber isolators between the tm and the boat so it will move when the motor is turned on and off. that could be it or just the place where its mounted is just weak and it will move nomatter what.

If that's the case, (weak)- any suggestions?  Or just keep on tightening regularly?

you can only tighten so much... then something will break. are the botls backing off? if so use some kind of locking nut or washers.

when is moves, dose the motor and the place where its mounted move or just the tm?

the trolling motor just rocks.  I should take it off, and see what is going on.  I have never taken it off, so that may reveal something.

Thanks-

You need to give more info.

Is it bow mount too glass or plywood covered in carpet, it's possible that plywood is rotten.

Minn Kota have these funny washers with ears that like to break.

Moto Guide have these rubber t's that are rocky.

I had the same issue so I took out 4 of the expanding nuts that it came with and just put bolts with a big washer and lock nut on the back side and it is solid as a rock.

Sounds like you need to change isolators. I changed mine three or four times over the years for the same reason as yours. Got tired of changing them and bolted mine with stainless bolts, nuts and washers. If you have access under your trolling motor this is easy to do, if not then the changing the isolators is easier. The isolators just drop in from the outside and expand to hold. Isolators are about $10 a set of 4 and are available at BPS, Cabelas or any Marine dealer............AL

Gee-----a whole world I know nothing about.

here we go...

It's a motorguide, bow mount to a fiberglass Stratos.

It has those rubber thingies, so I may try some hints from the last 2 post, about new bolts, or expanders.

Thanks for the help.

Just printed out the isolators from Cabelas, seems like a easy fix- most replied that the bolts were too short, and had to get longer ones.  If I can't gain access from under the trolling motor, these will probably be the fix.  thanks for the info-  I am a better man today, because I have learned something new.  Thanks again.

Jamie :

try to slide some shims under the base of the mount, this may solve your problem or I may have misunderstood your problem.

I am going to try and take the trolling motor off this afternoon, and see what kind of clearance I have, if any, under the motor.  If I have some room, I will simply add a nut, if not, I will pick up some of the isolator bolts, or something like it, to tighten up the works.  Thanks for the reply.
