Good afternoon!  

 

Have a 4th Gen Revo X 6.6:1 that I picked up this past spring.  Mostly threw senkos and cranks on 12-15lb line.  Didn't abuse it by any means.  I went out today and threw a jerk bait, and every 5 or 6 twitches my spool let loose and created an overrun.  Checked my drag, spool tension and brakes, but the issue continued.  

 

I'm hoping to get some Abu-specific feedback and see if I should get the warranty replacement, or get away from this reel entirely?

Are you  turning the handle to disengage the reel before you start twitch? I know its a silly question but you'd be surprise how many people I've seen not do this and just start jerking. If that is not the case it is definitely a drag issue. I would take it apart if you have the confidence and make sure the drag washers are clear of grease and oil also see if there are any glaring defects on the washers. I am an Abu nut but I don't have the X.

Thought a visual might help.  Apologize for the poor quality.  I tried to replicate the issue at the house, but I couldn't.  Starting to think this reel just doesn't like to be cold! 

 

 

The handle is turning when it "slips" means the drive train is engaged.  Most likely the anti-reverse bearing. Probably the combination of temperature and too much grease.  The combination of the two does not let the bearing engage the tube.

Haven't broke this reel down for any cleaning or maintenance yet, but it sounds like you think tearing it down and cleaning it up may solve the problem?

I don't know how much use you have on the reel but in my experience reels in general perform better if you do your own cleaning and use high quality oils and greases.   May not need a deep cleaning but does sound as though it would benefit from the AR bearing being cleaned and a little lighter oil/grease be used during the colder temps.

 

I would second the cleaning and the issue coming from the AR bearing after seeing the video.

Definitely looks like the AR bearing. Take the sideplate off and flush the AR bearing with a solvent, allow to dry and reassemble without lubrication. 

Wierdly enough same exact situation for me too. Jerkbait. Random jerks would make the spool almost disengage itself and cause a backlash. Fixed 1 of the birdsnest... but happened again like 10 min later. I think its the anti reverse bearing but i didnt get to take it apart yet to see if the bearing itself is over lubed or somthing.?

Put light oil in IAR try worth a try

I don't want to assume anything, but you mentioned you were also throwing a jerkbait.  What were air temps on that day?

 

@Heartland made a good point that too much lubrication combined with cold weather could be the culprit. This happened to me when it was about 30 degrees out, but I couldn't replicate the problem at home when the reel was at room temp.

Couple months ago...so probly in the low 50s
