Transom & decking

Featured Replies

First off I just want to Say to every one that did a bass conversion Awsome jobs & what a big help. I have a 14'v bottom that I want to deck.

I have two questions my first one is the wooden part of the transom, It is rotted out & i'm going to replace it . The way it is now there is two 3/4'' peices of plywood sandwiched together i wanted to know if one piece of say fur or pine maybe even oak would be better or should i stick with the two 3/4'' pieces ?

The second is the front casting deck, there is a bench seat with a bracket on each side & the bench slides in & bolts in place. I would remove the bench & slide my deck in & brace with angle underneath. That would put the deck only 8'' from the top . Is that low enough to still be stable to stand on or should i mount under the brackets? Maybe you guys who decked your v bottoms check your deck height?   Thanks

I have a 16' Starcraft Vhull that I did exactly the way you are describing.  The front deck is still low enough that the boat is very stable in the water.  Pics of my build are in the share-a-project in my signature line.

GatorTom, sweet boat  I have the same boat but in 14' & maybe alittle newer my transome has 2 more braces. When you decked the middle floor did you use 2 sheets of plywood cause for me to cover the floor ribs i wood need  like 56'' & I did'nt want to use 2 peices  I thought they might want to shift & then u would see it threw the carpet.

I used a refridgerator box to make one big template for the front.  I made the template 1/8" short on the sides to make room for the carpet. The plywood I used was tongue and groove on the ends.  I glued 1 1/2 pieces together with construction adhesive on the tongue and groove and let it set for the recommended time.  I then traced the front deck template on the big piece I glued together and cut it out and cut my hatch holes, etc in it.  I had to route out the underside of the deck where the livewell is because the cooler that I used stuck up about 1/4" above the bracing.  I waterproofed and carpeted the whole thing.  Once it was dry, me and a buddy slid it into the old seat braces and over the aluminum angle supports from the rear.  It took a little coaxing, but we got it into place.

I wouldn't worry about them shifting even if you don't glue them together.  Just plan it out to where one piece is held by your front seat praces and the other by the missle braces.  Once you bolt them down to the braces, they can't shift.

Oh, and post up some pics of your boat and the progress of your build.

Thats what I'll do , as for the pics I have just the tear apart pics & will post when I get it all done. Thanks again

1 1/2 inch anything is going to be a tough find. I'd stick with whatever the boat was made with. As far as deck height, Mine runs between 10-12" so I wouldn't think you'd be too bad off at 8.
