You should watch for spring demos and paddle some different kayaks to see what you like. Don't forget to look for used kayaks as there some really good deals out there that will leave you money to rig the yak the way you want it.

If you’re looking for lightweight, I’d definitely stay away Ascend. They are super heavy and they really don’t handle the water very well.

I see see lots of folks having good luck with Vibe boats.

If you could chum up just a bit more money, the NuCanoe Flint is the way I’d go. Very lightweight, handles all kinds of water very well, can stand up with easy, and since you’re tall, the seat is very easily adjustable. The deck is also flat and wide open for storage and/or standing up.

Good luck, and let us know what you go with!

Find some kayak dealers in your area and see if they are marking down any old stock or some used models.  Keep an eye out for sales.  I bought my first kayak that was on sale for Father's Day, the Pelican Catch 120 for $599.  I still recommend the Catch 120 if you can find one.

I haven't used it but I know the Vibe SeaGhost is a favorite for many in the sub-$1000 area.  If you can find one on sale that could be really good.  The NuCanoe products are fantastic and the Flint is $999 new.  If you can find it on sale or used I would definitely get that.

I've seen mixed reviews on the Ascend kayaks.  I know they can be a good starter for the price though.  I don't know a whole lot about the Perception kayaks either.

I have been pretty happy with my Field and Streat Talon SOT.  Kind of heavy for car topping, though.  I also had to replace the seat.

A lot depends on the waters you will fish. If smaller waters consider the Pelican Catch 100. Built for fishing, nice and stable, only 55 pounds so easy to transport. Just bought mine today for $580 from Dicks/Field&Stream

I picked up a field and stream from dicks years ago. It has worked very well. Is there better out there, yes but for the price (they seem to always have a sale in May) I would buy it again. You don't have to spend a lot of money to fish from a kayak. Get what you want and have fun.

New - watch for demo days in your area.

Vibe has $100 off right now.

Craigslist for used - alot of people buy them and then decide that it's not for them.
