Finally got my Dobyns 6'6" M/F in and have decided on the pfluger supreme XT-- which reel size should I go with for this rod?  I've never used a pfluger reel before and was wondering which may be a better balance.

25 is way to small for a medium rod.  go with 30

30 for sure. The 25 Pflueger reels are small, for ultralight/light action rods. The 30 will fit perfectly .

I used Plueger 30s in the past and like them.  But I got two President XTs last year in 25 size and love them.  Not too small for seven foot M rods at all.  Unless the Supreme XT is significantly smaller than President XT, I suggest 25.

I avoided spinning reels under around 30 size for many years and am sorry I did.

I have a regular Supreme 30 that I pair up with a medium rod. I would pair a 25 size with a medium light rod.

I'd agree with the 25 on a ML

The Pflueger 20 size would be UL

The 25 size is not only suitable for L and UL. A size 25 on a ML rod is perfect. A size 30 is perfect on a M rod. So size 30.

Size 25 = 5.2:1 ratio... size 30 = 6.2:1 ratio

 

My Supreme 25 is on a 7' ml power rod because I want to retrieve hair jigs and hand tied light-weight tail spinners.  When I want to use this rod for swimming grubs I put a size 30 reel on it.  I've had the size 25 on heavier spinning rods I was throwing mid-depth crankbaits with.  The two reel's size difference is not drastic enough to worry about, but the retrieve speed may be.
