First Bass Boat...How do I drive this thing?

Featured Replies

I recently bought my first bass baot and first boat with any kind of power.  Its a 17' Nitro with 115 Mercury.  I am having trouble upon stopping.  No matter how slow I stop water comes up on the back of the boat.  Usually it stays in that well place and drains fine but sometimes it comes up onto the rear casting deck a little.

The only thing that seems to help is to trim the motor all the way down as I slow down but it looks very unatural to have it trimmed so far down and I have watched other bass boaters that dont seem to have to do that when they stop.

What is the deal?  I cant figure it out no matter how slow I stop or how I play with the trim.

goose it a little when it sits down.  You'll get used to this and won't even think about it after a while.

Learn to trim down as you slow down.  After all you want the trim down for the next departure anyway.

Very common problem on many boats, as mentioned, you have to time it so you power up a little just before that bachwash hits it.  You can't just chop the power and let it settle of the backwash my really come up your back.  I will become second nature to give it a little gas just as it settles in.  After that initial backwash, you can let all the way off then.

My Javelin R20 doesn't do it but if I haven't used my Stratos 285 for a while, I don't forget to power up but once.  That one will put water all the way into the seats if you just chop the power on it.

I didnt even think about giving it some power like that.  Its 4:19 AM, headed to Toho.  Ill give it a try and report back.

Thanks again everyone, that seemed to do the trick most of the time.  I think the times it didnt work my timing was a little off.  I guess its an art.  I will keep working on it.

Thank you again!

yeah slowing down more it what I think as well... seems like your coming to an abrupt stop... go slow in there for a long time before you ease into stopping

I am slowing down VERY solwly sometimes and it dosent seem to change it much.  I mean I have tried slowing down pretty much as slow as I can stand it and it still happens.

slowing down might work on a light boat, but I've never had any luck with it on a heavy glass boat.

You can even chop the power at full power, let it settle and just as the back starts to settle, give it a little gas for a few feet to keep ahead of the back wash and then you can get up and get ready to start fishing.  After you get used to it, you don't even have to look back, it all becomes automatic.

I agree.  On a larger bassboat, cut the power but don't trim it down.  It will glide on plane for a short bit and then it will slowly settle into the water.  At just the right point give it some gas to avoid the backwash.  Then trim it down.
