i have canoe that i love to fish out of bc i can be quite, cuts through water nicely, i can get into shallows where most boats cant and where i fish can cut through standing timber with out gettn stuck on stumps/tree tops...also i live less than 5mi from James river so perfect setup for smallie fishin on river also. Just hooked on trolling motor and man does it save my arms from paddle around all day...im also thinking about adding depth finder / and gps and buying some better seats and some rod holders..just curious as to how everyone else hookd up their canoe for better fishing... :)

I am also a big fan of the stealth canoe approach - I put a minnkota 55 on an Old Towne Predator square back 15'3''. I love it. I have a Hummingbird gps/sonar on it - I think it's the 636 model I put the battery in a Minnkota battery box that comes equipt with 2 12 volt accessory inputs - I use one for the hummingbird and one for a spot light for night operations :)

I can PM you some more info / photo's if you'd like . . . .

The Predator is very stable for standing and fishing - I do it all day - but we must remember - it's a CANOE not a bass boat so sooner or later I expect I take a tumble - but I hope to stay dry  I put an extension handle on the trolling motor and that alone makes a World of difference as far as balace is conerned - it gives me something to hold on to - it really helps. The canoe is 40 inches wide and very stable for a canoe. . . . . . . .

A-Jay how are the canoe seats holding up? I just purchased one from Cabela's but have not tried it yet. I was concerned about durabilty.

  • Super User

Seats are holding up fine - my wife really likes the seat backs - very comfy . . . . . . I even use them with the back folded down and sit on the back so I can turn and cast from side to side without the seat obstructing my casts - and then when I'm motoring to my next spot - just pop it up and I'm stylin' . . . . .

Wow, great setup A-Jay. Could you also send me a pm with more pics/info of your setup. I am searching for a canoe and was contemplating a square stern. I like the setup for two, but would be used solo most of the time. Maybe I can use some of your ideas on my Leisurecraft.

How long would you say your battery lasts hour-wise if you had your trolling motor on near max speed?

Thanks a bunch,

Riverator

Riverator,

Yes,  I will send you everything I have - pictures, write ups and links in a PM.

My battery lasts a total of 3 hours if I run it on max.

If I run it at about 65% I get there a fraction slower but increase my battery life to 6 hours.  That includes trolling around at very slow speeds to change positions and hold into the wind once you get there.

I am on my way out the door, watch your PM's later today, it will be two separate messages.

See ya
