Any reliable stream thermometers out there?

Featured Replies

I was looking at reviews online for some thermometers, but I didn’t see many good reviews for any of them.

Are there any you use that you would recommend for reliability and accuracy?

Thanks

Look for an aquarium thermometer. You can get a good/reliable/accurate one online for just a few bucks.

I've got one I never use anymore. I'll give it to you. Let me know when you'll be fishing the "Duper" and I'll meet up with you.

That’s Awesome Scott! Thankyou

I actually just got back from fishing there just now before I saw the message.

Waded plainfield area with Ned Rigs and 3” Grubs. Didn’t see a fish. I’m sure water still to cold.

I use two types: A dial type from either Taylor Instruments, or Omega Instruments. I think the Taylor one is called "Dial-Temp." They come calibrated, and are re-calibrate-able. About $25.

I also use regular "stream thermometers" (alcohol), usually from fly-fishing sources or hardware stores. About $20. To get closest guess to accuracy, I look at all of them on the peg, pull out the outliers (if any) then average the temps of the remaining, and then choose one at the average. The one you buy can be checked against your Dial-Temp too.

I have this AcuRite thermometer with a 10' wire/ probe. I've tied on a small sinker to the actual sensor, and throw it out a bit, so that I'm not measuring the temperature of the water real close to the shoreline.

Seems fairly accurate, and has been going strong for at least 4 years.

Not all gauges on all rivers provide temperature readings. The rivers that the original poster fishes don’t show temps on the USGS site.

Yeah, I’ve gotten frustrated with that in the past trying the Usgs for the Dupage. That’s the reason I was looking for a thermometer.
