Fiberglass Boat & Transducer

Featured Replies

I have a 80's model 14' Randall Craft Fiberglass boat and I have just installed a new depth/fish finder and was curious about the transducer location. I have two aluminum boats and I had to mount those on the outside hull because it could not shoot thru the aluminum hull.

My question is, can I mount the transducer on the fiberglass hull inside the boat in the rear where the bilge pump is and it work properly or does it have to be mounted on the outside hull? It's probably a half inch thick where it would be mounted.

it depends on the transducer. it has to be a thru hull transducer, if not then mount it just like on your aluminum.

Ahh! I have the one in this image, so it won't work. Thanks!

When I worked for Academy this is what all depth finder manufactures representatives told us about transducers.

Every model on the market comes with the transducer shown above which will mount to the transom or trolling motor; if the customer wants a through the hull transducer they must simply send the transom mount one to the factory and it will be exchanged for a puck type for free.

Thats exactly what it said in the box mine came in. Correct me if I am wrong but the puck is a different breed in that it doesnt have to be submerged.

Exactly right. I have exchanged several over the years at BPS if you have one nearby.

If you do mount it in the boat be sure to use two part epoxy and do not stir it. It will cause bubbles that will affect the operation. Just knead the two parts together and you will be fine. there is more to it so PM me if you need to know.

Skimmers can be mounted inside the same as pucks.  I had one for several years and only took it out last summer.

Thanks guys, I didn't know that about the transducers. I will give them a call and see if I can't get mine exchanged.

Thanks again!
