Hula Grub Alternatives?

Featured Replies

Are there any brands that make a less expensive version of the Yamamoto Hula Grub?

Thanks much!

Chompers and Cabin Creek both make a Hula grub type soft plastic, look at Spider Jig Skirts. Garry Garland who created tubes (Gitzit) was the originator of the spider jig skirt.

Thanks for posting The Berkley Bearded Baits. Those look good. I’m surprised there isn’t many reviews for them online. Are they pretty new?

I think they are. I got the junebug and silver and yellow ones the other day but haven't had a chance to use them yet.

I’m pretty sure the Berkley Bearded Series was introduced in 2017 , and the Standard Berkley Havoc Duece without the Hula Skirt was introduced in 2011 or 2012

Choppers twin tail skirted grubs are about  $5.50 for 10 each in both 4" & 5" sizes.

Berkley Bearded twin tails come 4" size 5 each for about $3.80, GYCB Hula grubs are around $7.50 for 10 each in both 4" & 5" sizes.

So the Berkley is really the most expensive per piece, but I don't think a lot of us look at it like that when we're trying something new. It's not until we're hooked that we start thinking about the price per piece.

Also, that price is on sale. They're a buck a piece at BPS.

OP was looking for less expensive. Put the Chompers twin tail spider grub on their Standup jig, 8 for $5.50 (.69 each) .55 + .69 =$ 1.24 ea, can't get any more less expensive for a jig with trailer that works.

My fav is the Cabin Creek Spider Parts. The skirts come separate so its easy to mix/match. Also you'll notice one tentacle is thicker than the rest - that's to rig the jig head weedless.

I payed $1 dollar per bag for my Berkley Bearded Grubs at Walmart in March 2019. But at full retail $3.79 per bag of 5 , they are slightly more expensive per plastic than Chompers. Being they are Powerbait, I think the extra cost is reasonably justified .

Slightly? 7.59 per 10 vs 5.49 per is 2.10 or .21 each difference. Berkley's grubs are the same price per unit as Yamamoto, no savings.I started fishing spider jigs back in the 70's with Garland skirts and twin tail grubs long before Yamamoto came out the Hula grub. Garland went out of business and Bobby Garland restarted Canyon Lures making the Gitzit but discontinued spider skirts. Yamamoto has also discontinued offer spider skirts, he only offers the Hula grubs today.

I don't like the strong garlic scent Chompers uses but work and less expensive.

Arkie Salty Crawlin' Grub.  I have tried several others over the years since I found this bait years and years ago and I just seem to catch way more on the Arkie. I prefer to fish them on the 3/8 oz stand-up jig head. Back when I first found them at Wal-mart, you could get them pre-rigged in the package. Now I just order from the Arkie Lures website. www.arkiejigs.com/product-p/cg.htm
