After making the overhand knot with the doubled line can you cinch this down before you pass the hook through the loop?It seems that this would make the tying simpler. Would this compromise the strength of the knot?

I cinch it down a little, but leave it loose so everything slides easily.

 

You could theoretically compromise strength if you have to pull harder than usual on the line, and from friction from pulling the loop through an already-tight knot.

Noticed you're in Wabash County, Indiana. Born, raised and live in California; but went to college at Wabash College in Crawfordsville.

it depends on the line. I personally don't cinch it down tight, but braid would be the most forgiving.

If you cinch down mono or fluorocarbon before passing the hook through the line it will usually burn the line, when you finish cinching the knot. You can usually tell when this happens, because the line will be wavy looking where it passed through the knot.

 

when tying treble hooked baits I will lightly cinch the knot on one of my fingers before passing the bait through the loop.

then just remove my finger, wet the line and finish cinching the knot This makes it more manageable and helps prevent burning the knot.

 

I don't cinch it down until everything is in place...loop over the hook/lure. Then wet it and slowly tighten it. If it's mono or FC, if you don't lubricate it (spit works best) then the line will heat up during the tightening and weaken the knot. I also don't cinch it hard, just enough to tighten the knot.

Don't do it with nylon or fluoro based lines. It will compromise the line strength. Braids tend to cinch closed in that area before tightening anyway due to a lack of stiffness, but I've never been able to determine any negative effects from it.

You can snug up the double line over hand just don't ever twist the loop putting the hook through it,then clinch down the wet knot with the tag end only.
