The difference. Big or small?

Featured Replies

What is the difference between certain strains of largemouth? The way they look? I’ve noticed Florida strain seem to fight harder and look darker. But I would like to hear from those who really know.

I've noticed a bigger effect that water clarity has. I have some amazing light green, white belly'd, dark green lateral lined bass in some of my clearer lakes. Then I go fish a muddy lake and pull out a largemouth that has black lines, dark green scales and brown or golden belly.

It varies between the individual fish IMO. Most of our lakes have northern strain, but I've fished for Florida strain fish too. I've caught some really hard pulling individuals of both strains, and some that didn't fight much at all of both. I've also caught some Tiger bass, they're very aggressive and hard pullers. Not really any way to tell the difference by look alone.

Pound for pound Spotted bass and Smallmouth bass are fighting champs of Black bass family. Largemouth bass grow larger, northern strain and Florida strain or intergrades of the LMB strains. Comparing pound for pound is the only benchmark anyone can use.

How do you compare  10 lb LMB to a 5 lb Spotted ot Smallmouth bass? You can compare a 5 lb Spotted or Smallmouth to a 5 lb LMB, northern or Florida strain and the LMB doesn't compare in fighting ability.
