Rod and line for casting a Deeper Pro+?

Featured Replies

I recently received a deeper smart sonar pro+ for my birthday and I'm psyched to use it but I'm worried about casting it and breaking my rod or my line, so I want to pick up a dirt cheap combo dedicated to using the deeper. Does anyone have suggestions on rods (I already have a cheap reel I don't mind using for it) and how heavy of a line I should spool it with? It weighs 3.5 ounces for reference.

Thanks!

65# braid and a cheap heavy or extra heavy. Ugly sticks are cheap and pretty much indestructible.

I use a 6'6 Berkley Big Game rated 1-4oz, and 50lb KastKing braid (it's what I had on a back up reel). Basically I just lob cast it, sometimes I just throw it like a baseball if it's in close quarters to brush or trees.

I would agree with @Mikeltee 40-65# braid and the all but indestructible Ugly Stik, as for the reel (I know you said you have one already) I would probably go with something along the lines of an older Zebco 404 or a low end priced baitcaster.  When I was casting my first Deeper 3.0 on a spinning set up the bail had a tendency to close too soon (never could figure out why, worked fine without the Deeper on it) which is why I recommend a closed face or baitcaster.

I love the Pro+ but now I use mine with the flex arm (original, not the new 2.0) on my kayak, with an 8 inch tablet. It's just perfect for my needs.

Wishing you all the best with yours.

When i had the deeper, i just used a regular medium rod that i had sitting around and a spinning reel. I would hold the rod in my left hand with the bail open and throw the deeper like a baseball. I find that i can throw it pretty accurately and I didn't have to get a dedicated rod for it.

I went with a 8'0" H Cabelas Whuppin Stick (those are about $25 bucks and good broomstick), 65lbs Spiderwire pink camo braid (bright just in case it breaks) and an old Quantum ICOM spinning reel. I could chuck that thing so far that the deeper would lose contact with the phone. :) Cheap way to ensure you don't loose your device way out there.

I used a MH ugly stik spinning combo with 65 lb braid.  Agreed you can only chuck it so far and maintain good contact.

I thought about buying a "Tile" or similar tag for lost items to insert inside the Deeper in case I lost the whole thing.

It would be cool if you guys started a thread on using the Deeper in the electronics section.  I'd love to hear more about who is using it and what they find it helpful for (but don't want to threadjack).
