President 20 series combo help

Featured Replies

Hi, just purchased a 20 series president combo with the 4ft8in pole. I spooled up some suffix 832 10lb braid that is 4lb mono equivalent. I left my normal lip, and went out to the local pond. It was a nightmare to the point where I may just return this already. Every other cast while retrieving, the line would either not tightly wind on the reel or end up below the spool area itself and wrapped there. Any fixes before I give up on an ultralight setup?

Here is how it retrieves with line under spool

Try adding spool shims to even out the line lay.

I had the same problem, take some line off. Take a little at a time until it spools better.

What are spool shims?

I will remove around 10 yards and try again. Thanks

What lure are you throwing? I think you need some weight on your lure to create tension to pull the line taut as you're reeling with braid. I have the exact same rod for my son and I have 4lb KastKing Fluorokote and have no issues with the line, other than an occasional line twist because my son still reels when he snags up. We mainly throw bobber set ups, and small 1/16oz trout magnets.

Did the line lay like that when you first spooled it?

No, line was fine when laid. Do you have the smallest 20 size?  I am throwing a crappie rattle bobber with a 1/64 jig and a gulp alive 1" minnow. I throw the same setup on my Shimano Stradic CI4 3000 with the same line but 20lb test with a 6'6" St Croix premier rod. Zero issues ever. Maybe I will sell this and get a Shimano, never owned a different reel other than stradics all my life.

Yes, the 4'8 UL combo. The Stradic 3000 will pick up the braid better because of the larger spool, so keep that in mind when comparing...it's apples to apples. Maybe try mono or fluoro, thin diameter braid is just more limp than the filament types.
