Rod+Lure Weight

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I am new to these forums but I have a quick question. I just did a bunch of research on rods for crankbaits and settled on the Lew's Hack Attack 7' Medium Power Moderate action.

Now the specs on the rod says it can handle up to a 3/8 oz lure. However the KVD 1.5 I use is 7/16 I believe. Will that have any impact on the rod? Will I risk breaking the rod?

I was confused that a M/M rod was only rated to 3/8 oz so I did a little searching. According to the specs on Academy, the 6'8" M/F is only rated to 3/8 but the 7' M/M (LHA70M-CB) is rated 1/4-3/4. I'd check the rod itself, it should have the line/lure ratings printed between the grip and the first guide.

Without googling I'm pretty confident the 1.5 is a 3/8 lure.  I have thrown it on really flimsy spinning gear no problem so I'm pretty sure whatever rod you got will be just fine.

Some say it's 3/8, some say it's 1/2. 7/16 splits the difference I guess. Basically all the same. Either it's overrated or the WP 90 is. The 90 is supposedly 1/2 and it's definitely heavier than a KVD 1.5.

Had to google it.  It's 3/8.

Lure ratings are not that precise, so I would expect no problem with using a lure that close to the ratings.  If you were to go up to something like 3/4 you would want to slow the casting motion way down to where you were almost lobbing it out in order to not take a risk on the rod.  But it still could be done with little to no risk.
