I had a good experience with Fins braid at @WRB's suggestion. They recently launched a new braid, "sling braid" and I got some. I was a little on the fence on diameter, as it seems a little thinner than others at the similar lb test. In particular, the 30lb is .009 and the 50lb is .012. This compares to Sufix 832 30lb at .011. 50lb seemed a little big, so I got the 30.

 

Am I overthinking this, or am I about to have a bad experience with the 30lb on  baitcasters, because it is so thin and will dig?

I run Daiwa Samurai Brand at 30lb on pretty much all my reels, less my dedicated flipping stick at 65lb - have no issues with it and this brand is the same diameter of the Fins braid.

Samurai 20 lb is .009 dia, 30 is .010, how is that the same?

.009 is very small dia for a baitcasting reel

I run 10lb powerpro V2 .006" and sunline Xplasma 16lb .0082" on two of my Metanium's, never have had 

any dig in problems.

 

The thing is most of diameters posted on braided line are wrong, they are actually thicker then 

what they say.

 

The Sunline 16lb actually feels thinner then the 10 Powerpro.

This has been addressed several times. Regardless the stated strength or brand use diameter as your point of reference. And take those numbers with a grain of salt. Braid is difficult to measure as accurately as mono.

Mono or any single strand of line is extruded round.  Braid is basically yarn made up of multiple micro fibers twisted into a strand, each strand is wound on a bobbin, 1 or 2 bobbins are put into a carrier post, the carriers spin and braid the strands into line. The finished braided line is soft, uneven and can flatten or becomes oval shaped. The only way braid can be measured accurately is running the line though a round precision gage hole, calipers or micrometers can only measure what is between 2 flat opposed surfaces.

when mono is spooled onto a reel it remains round. When braid is loaded onto a spool it flattens and becomes oval shaped. The tighter the braid is loaded the flatter it becomes, it's never round unless going between round gage blocks to measure it.

The problem casting small diameter braid is it's very length weight, tends to kite and wrap rod tip giudes or wind knot. If the bait casting reel is designed with a fast level wind that over laps the braid going onto the spool helps preventing the line digging into itself on the spool under pressure.

The lure weight starts the bait casting reel spool to spin not the line. The line only becomes an issue after the spool is spinning while the lure is in flight changing speed or it's not comming off the spool evenly.
