Using top water lures'

Featured Replies

I live in western Penna. between Altoona and Pittsburgh. How long can I throw top water lures? Can I throw them into November?

As long as they are biting.  For me it generally stops once the water gets below 50 degrees.

Air temps are really secondary unless there is a lot of wind.

Thank you JediAmoeba for that information. I had no idea as to how long I could throw top water lures.

I'm in Northern Missouri and have thrown them in November before . They seem to work  better in cold water during autumn than spring .

If there is a severe drop in temp bass will often stop hitting surface lures. Once they adjust to the new average temp they will go back to actively feeding and start hitting your topwater lures again. So, don't think it's over just because a cool snap has blown thru. Give it a day or two to level out and you can probably catch some on your favorite topwater presentation again. At least until the water temp cools to the point that they quit hitting topwater altogether. Being from the south I can't give you any predictions on that, LOL!

One of the biggest bass I caught in 2016 was caught on Black Friday.

I’m in the minority here as I’ll throw top waters until the lake starts to freeze around the shoreline. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t my first choice and I don’t stick with one unless they’re really committing to it.  As the water cools, my presentation slows down almost to the point of dead sticking. What can I say? I’m the type that would rather catch one on top water than two on a jig.

scaleface, Big Rick and papajoe222,

Thank you for your information. Tonight after supper, I will put a Berkley Choppo on and just throw until its time to go home.
