I was recently invited by a friend to take a trip up to toledo bend with him to practice for a tournament he is competing in.  He e-mailed me a list of baits that i should bring and one of them was jigs.  I have used jigs before but i have never even caught a bass on a jig and i only own one.  I  e-mailed him back but it has been almost 3 days and i have not heard from him.  We leave in a 4 days and and i want to be prepared for the trip.  I was just wondering what would be  the best brand of jig to get.

I mainly use jewel eakins or football jigs. That is what most people around here use but I have a friend that swears by revenge jigs. I think that you can get them on ***.com. They would probably be better suited for the lake that you are going to fish. Good luck.

I've been using Booyah and Strike King Bitsy Bugs.

The absolute most productive jig on Toledo Bend is an Oldham's Lures Trailer Hitch Jig, 3/8 oz Black/Blue, Gene Larew Salty Hawg Craws in 6 with 1 ½ cut off the tail.

If you are fishing down south a black and blue jig with a Moccasin Blue plastic worm trailer works well.

Pitch it up to the shoreline against cover or structure just like a plastic worm.

Remember to use a trailer to bulk it up if necessary.

For some reason, those black and blue jigs seem to work very well below the Mason-Dixon line.

Unfortunantly the trip has been called off due to my friend having work related issues.

I went fishing this morning though and i tried using only jigs.  I did not catch anything but i did have a few hits, but didn't realize that they were hits till it was too late and missed the small window to set the hook.  So I think that i will try it again the next time i go out. ;D  Thanks for the help.

Dont forget...hook sets are free...set it on anything that feels like it might be a fish and after a while you'll be able to tell the difference...

Also, pay attention to the line as the bait falls.  A lot of jig bites come on the fall.

I fish with worms alot so naturally i was paying attention to the line on the fall.  But since i was throwing it in heavy cover (which i dont normally do) it throwing me off a little.  Next time though i will pay a little closer attention.

Do you use a spining rod or bait caster for jigs?

I like the pepper jigz football head, in brown and purple.  It produces very well with a black with blue flake zoom chunk.  I have caught 5 nice fish, in 2 days on it.  I lost it soon after that last fish...    I need to get another, but they are pricey at $3.50...

baitcasting rig...i dont have a specific rod/reel for jig fishin yet but when i do it'll be a 7'-7'6" MH-H with 30lb braid...itll double for a musky/catfish rod too...
