I will be leaving for LA tomorrow, I would like to fish while I’m there so I’m gonna pack a rod. I will be staying at the ritz Carrollton and the Marriott, in Laguna beach, is there fresh or saltwater fishing around there? Good fishing this time of year? I just threw together a surf and freshwater tackle tray. All info appreciated.

Your best bet is Oceanside Harbor for local salt water fishing. It's winter so colder water currents come into play and most boats will be deep water rock fish fishing. Winter Yellowtail and Calico bass at the islands is a possibility.

Look up the sportfishing boats, Halgrens comes to mind but there are a few others.

Most of the chartered boats have their own rent rods available.

Best bet is to give them a call.

Tom

PS, if you can afford the Ritz Carlton give Bongos 6 pack charter a call in Newprot Beach.

Shore fishing for sand perch. Carolina rig with sand worms from Berkeley. Rent a kayak and hit the big blue. Plenty of kayak guys. https://www.southwindkayaks.com/pages/places-to-kayak-paddle-board-in-orange-county

Also, you could rent a skiff in newport harbor, and fish for halibut, sandies, spotted bay bass, ect..Fresh water bass lures will work for salt bass. Here's a link.

I did the skiff rentals a few weeks ago and had a blast with the kids.  the boats are a bit shoddy for the price, but I guess they are fine in the harbor.  Next time, I'm coming prepared with baitcasters and some plastics.  It was touch dragging bait on the bottom with the current and seaweed.
