I'm just learning about jigs and picking a few out.

 

Talking about skirted jigs: Arkie, football, finesse...

 

Ignoring cost, why go with Tungsten?  

 

Obvious reasons:  compact heads, better vibration transmission = better "feel."  Of course, keeping lead out of waterways.

 

What are the other reasons?

 

What is the advantage of a more compact head?  

 

Interested to hear your thoughts on tungsten vs lead for these.

I use tungsten bullet weights but lead jigs. As a matter of fact I'll still throw lead bullet weights under 1/4 oz.

To me the only other reason is legality in my state.

Agreed.  I like the smaller profile of tungsten to match my typical soft plastic presentation when Texas rigging, but only past 1/4oz.  I don't see a reason to switch from lead jigs, however.  I can feel enough and I'm not trying to finesse with a jig, I'm trying to be a big profile that gets a big smack.

 

Love that jig bite.

Me too ~

While tungsten certainly has it's place in my fishing, it does not completely replace lead;

especially when lighter weights are called into duty.  

Presentations where I need a slower fall rate or where I want to present my rig so that it sits on top of bottom cover and not plunge through it, a little lead bullet weight makes that happen.

And I'm pretty sure most of my 'little lead' has a born on date that's in the mid 1980's.

I agree.

In the shallow water marshes round here I quite often go as small as 1/64 or 1/16oz, not sure tungsten comes that light.

It might but I'd need tweezers to pick it out of my terminal tackle box.
