Just pulled the trigger on a Dobyns Fury

Featured Replies

That 40% off code at SW was just too good to pass up, even though the bait/gear monkey is supposed to be firmly in his cage right now with all the economic uncertainty.  I got the 733C (7'3" med/heavy fast action).  Looking for it to be an all-purpose rod.  This is my first non-Walmart bass rod purchase ever so I'm looking forward to finding out what all the hype is about with the Dobyns rods.

Now on to the decision of what reel to pair with it.  I have been looking at the H20 Mettle M3.  All aluminum frame and 10+1 bearings for $59.99?  Seems like a pretty solid combo for a grand total of $131.

I own a 733, 734, 735, and the 705 crankbait rod. they are all decent rods.

Dobyns power ratings tend to run lighter than other companies.

the 733 is a good light duty rod for super flukes ,weightless senkos, and light texas rigged worms.

it is definitely not a medium heavy rod. It is a 3 power rod which is closer to a medium action rod., with a lure rating of 1/4 to 3/4 oz.

A 734 is closer to what other companies would classify as medium heavy. it is a 4 power rod, with a lure rating of 1/4 to 1 oz.

733 is a good choice but not the end all be all.  Sooner or later you will probably want a 734 too so might want to let the monkey know.  You can cover a lot of techniques with those 2 rods.  All depends what you like to throw.

Where do you find the 40% off code?. I looked at the sportman's warehouse site but did not find it.

thanks,

Albert

I think he means Sportsmans Outfitters. Code is On their front page banner.

I think the 733 is a good choice, my first Dobyns was a 703c, they will just make you want more. IMO, the 3 power is more of a versatile rod than the 734 in the Fury series. The FR 734 is faster than the other 734 models and better for jigs rather than reaction baits like the other 734 models.

Did anyone else order from SO? I got a confirmation email two days ago, but nothing else so far.

I ordered on Thursday or Friday last week and still no email saying it's shipped.

My pole arrived yesterday, never got an email with shipping. I emailed them yesterday morning to ask about tracking number and they gave it to me and said it was delivered that morning.

OP here...update...ordered my rod last Friday, still waiting (and no shipping email yet, but not worried based on others' responses here).

Also, pulled the trigger on a Lew's Tournament MP (7.3:1) to go with it.  At 119 sale price on SO, that just seems like a solid reel for the money.

I ordered mine 3/26

Shipment email notification 3/31

Rod arriving tomorrow via FedEx

so just right at a week +1 day.

I went the other direction from some of the folks above.  I got a 734 first (as suggested by the person I talked to at Dobyns) and then got a 703.

You will find them to be a very useful if you're bank fishing and don't want to carry a rod for every technique.

As far as reels are concerned, my suggestion is always the same... Find a Shimano in the price range you're comfortable with.  OR... Wait until BPS has a Pro Qualifier for $50.  Good little reels but better options are available if you're paying full retail.
