My buddy was fishing today and his reel engaged mid cast twice & The second time the spool was rubbing on the reel frame and the spool tension knob Does not loosen up the spool meaning there is no side play no matter how loose the tension knob is. Any ideas what might have happened.

This is a new 6:3 used about 4 trips.

I would remove the sideplate and pull out the spool to see if something is broke, or loose.

If you can't find the problem contact Diawa, They are usually pretty good on warranty issues.

I removed the side plate and didn’t see anything. He’s going to call Monday morning.

Could the spool shaft have gotten bent?

Not sure when the reel engaged the last time it locked up pretty good. He’s going to send it in for repair just waiting till Monday to call. 

I've heard of the spool shaft bending on really bad nests or when the clutch engages mid cast. If you can get the spool out try and inspect the shaft.

Just turn the spool and it will wobble if the shaft is bent....which it probably is by the sounds of it.

Question: Why was the reel engaging on the cast in the first place? Did your buddy change the handle on the reel? Ive seen a lot of good reels ruined from engaging on the cast due to an unbalanced jigging handle used on a casting reel. At any rate the engagement issue needs to be dealt with. The bent shaft (or whatever it is) is a symptom of a more serious problem.

Brand new stock reel nothing was changed.

Unless there is something he's doing to engage the clutch I would send it back to Daiwa. They arent supposed to do this....obviously.

The only reel I ever had this happen on was a Rojo with a flippin switch. Im not sure i it was a faulty reel or if it was me engaging the switch on the cast. After the second time it happened I got rid of it. There are too many good reels available to waste my time on one with problems.

Actually, considering the reel is currently unusable it needs to be sent in regardless.

Yep, Last year I bought one of the new Ryoga 1520 reels and immediately stuck a big single knob handle on it.  Three trips and two lost swimbaits later it came right off.  It’s too bad though, I loved the feel of it and it made slow rolling a Hudd a breeze

He’s not doing anything I was watching the second time it happened his hand weren’t even close to the reel. 

Does the Ryoga have the shaft cup incorporated into the handle like the JDM reels? If not any aftermarket Daiwa compatible balanced power handle with the counter weight should work on it. I have a dozen CV-Z and CV-X reels and all have aftermarket handles except for the JDM models.

I would honestly have to pull it apart again and look, it’s been enough months that I don’t remember. I definitely had about four instances of the handle engaging during the cast and that was enough for me to quit fooling with it.

I actually have the handle on a CV-253 now, I almost never use the combo it’s on but in the little bit I have used it I’ve never noticed the same problem.

 

I had this happen with the old SV and the New one I sent in to the tackle trap as they are authorized repair shop and they said that one of the main gear teeth had broken and replaced it. They said that sometimes you can either not have the clutch all the way engaged or accidental re-engage it mid cast. So far since they fixed it I haven’t had an issue

If its a CV-X 253 or an American (Non JDM) CV-Z version any aftermarket handle will work. I had a Pluton that was very similar to the Ryoga and standard aftermarket handles would work on it. Choose a big handle with he biggest counterweight you can find and it should work without issues. BTW....the Ryoga is a tank!

I know this is an old post but this is knowledge for any future beings looking for the same info. I had the exact problem. When fishing saltwater on a kayak one of my rod leashes got caught around the cranking handle and engaged it while casting causing this is exact problem. The reel wouldn't cast and seem bound up when reeling. Tore the whole think down, like all the way cleaned it all seperated bearings from frame cleaned and oiled put it back still had problem. Thing is everything ran smooth until id put the side cover on. Somehow I think the shaft moved in the spool or something. I ended up taking a fingernail file and sanded the spool shaft down until it freely spun again. Now its better than new! Not sure the exact cause but simply sanding it down fixed it. Shorting it down in length not diameter.

Here is an off the wall question, and I've witnessed this before :  Is there too much line on the reel?  New reel, spooled with new line;  the line will swell when it gets wet and could rub against the bottom of the reel frame and the reel seat.
