Tip top advice.

Featured Replies

I have built several rods with mimima guides and tip tops.  I use these rods at least a couple of times a week with mostly 6 lb mono.  A couple of weeks ago my line on one of the rods felt rough so I checked the guides and found the minima tip tops had many grooves.  I have a couple more rods I put ceramic tip tops on that are OK.  I'd say the CRB LSR guides will do the same thing.

the only guides I have ever had that grooved were cheap ceramic tiptops.  So I use premium Fuji SIC tiptops on all my builds and replacements now.  No grooving so far, and it's been quite a while since I switched.

That has been reported on Minima tips. I use Fuji Alconites for most of my builds. The BFCAT tip is my go to.

When I want the lightest possible guide train, I use Recoils. But, not the Recoil tip. I use the BFCAT tip on the Recoil builds.

This is a long known problem, like ghoti said, it didn't take people, and some of the manufacturers like G Loomis, long to quit using REC tip tops when using REC guides, mid production first year they were already getting complaints and switched over to a ceramic tip top. This was 15+ years ago, My #2 replacement has probably been Pure Fishing's tip tops on their rods, just took off a set of Berkeley Lightning Rod grooved guides and went all ceramic  for a guy.

I'm glad others are seeing this because I have been told many times I was full of excrement when saying Minima and SS304 tips groove, even with photo evidence.  I even have stripper and running guides with grooves and was told hogwash, impossible.

The Minimal guides are superior to the guides used by Pure Fishing in all their rods, Janns Netcraft sold those guides long before Pac Bay brought out their versions.

I have been told, but have no personal evidence, that the Minima3 guides would groove over time, but the Minima4 series will not. I have not tried them, and probably won’t. I know the Recoil tips will groove, and do not use them.

Whatever guides you use, always use a premium ceramic tip.
