Baitcaster question

Featured Replies

Hello, I recently purchased a Shimano Citica. I’ve never used a high quality reel like this. I accidentally made the mistake of spool my reel entirely with the cast control knob tightened all the way since I forgot about loosening it. I did not notice it was tightened since I normally spool my reel and keep the line tight. Did I just mess up my reel from the get go?

I think I'm understanding that you spooled line on the reel with the tension knob tightened down? It shouldn't hurt anything, just loosen it back to where it needs to be and fish with it.

Yes exactly, also, I should have written hurt ego as well since this was a simple mistake lol. Lesson learned

Pull the spool tension control knob off and check the washer under the cap. Citica I washers are a soft (compared to metal) fiber material and I've had one dimple with relatively light use. If you tightened it all the way down this may have happened. If if did, just flip the washer over.

Noticeable dimple is ok, it's a matter of how much. As long as it doesn't look like it was drilled into, you're likely just fine.

Oh - while in there - put a small dab of grease on the black flat spacer (washer). Right on the "dimple".  My new Shimano Bantam looked dry there to me. Really should be greased.

Hey garroyo, thanks for the response. I pulled off my cast control knob and looked under. I was surprised to see that I’m actually missing two little parts. Under the control knob is just a spring. I am missing piece 1696 “cast control spacer” and square looking piece “2224 spoil tension spacer”. Do you have both of these items and what piece is exactly the “dimpled washer”. I wrote down these piece numbers from shimano Citica I Manual for the 201hg model. Wish I could post a photo yet it saying the photo size is too big for the post. Thanks!

Yes, I have both spacers. Those spacers will stay stuck to the cap held on by grease usually so make sure to look there. The square one is the one that dimpled on mine.

Hey garroyo, I can confirm I do have both those spacers due to closer inspection with your analysis! Much appreciated. I really have little experience when it comes to looking at the internals of these reels. Also, can you please elaborate more on your definition of a “dimple”. I am looking at the square washer and not sure what to look out for. Thanks!

Just like it sounds its a dimple on its surface. If your washer is perfectly flat then nothing to worry about.

The Citica I is a really good reel. Only thing to look out for is to make sure you oil the brake drum.

Much appreciated!! Excited to use the reel and will keep up on the lubing maintenance! The analysis here was incredible!
