Simple backing question

Featured Replies

Assuming I am going to use cheap mono as backing when it comes to picking what size mono backing to put on do you want the backing to have a smaller, same or larger outside line diameter than the main line? I would assume you would want it to be the same but if you say it should be smaller or larger please explain your thought process. Thanks!

Back when I use to use backing, it was either 10 or 12 lb mono, no matter what size my top shot line was, 10 lb mono/fluro to 50 lb braid. Just make sure the backing is spooled on taught with an even line lay.

There isn't any reason to use backing under braid unless it's to save money. Braid is lighter weight the either mono, Copoly or FC line. Lighter weight spool cast better.

If it's a money problem buy cheaper Dacron braid for filler. Otherwise fill the spool with braid and simply turn it around each year.

I would suggest that you get the least expensive 10# mono you can find in a high visibility color.  That way as you repeatedly re-tie you can get an idea how much regular line you have left givinhpg you an indication on whe you have to re-spool. I find that 12# has more memory and is a bit harder to work with.

in addition, I take a sharpie and make a mark on the inside of the spool indicating the level of backing I want to put on.  My goal is to spool between 80-100 yds of my main line over the backing material.

I think 10 lb is best. I use the BPS Excell, ten bucks for a giant spool. Like people said, turn the braid around once it gets worn. I like 100ish yards of mainline. minimum amount of backing is enough to cover the spool. can also use electrical tape.

Main reason of ppl who use backing is to save money for expensive mainline either braid or FC. Saving money meaning use whatever already available. If I don’t have available, I would go for the next option which is buy a line Brand and pound test that I can use as main line later like Hybrid, Izorline or big game.
There is no reason to buy new line just for backing, I don’t think you need 1000yds of backing in one or two lifetime.
