replacing hooks on spinner baits/crank baits with circle hooks

Featured Replies

Hey,

Does anyone have experience with using circle hooks as replacements from standard j hooks or treble hooks? I saw something that said they are not effective on spinner/crank type lures, so I want to see what the experts here think/know of it. Thanks as usual ?

I use them for wacky rigging, they work great. You just have to reel set, no back breaking hook set. I use them weightless and with a ball head on them. They won't be as effective on cranks as they won't sit straight. Due to the hook eye, they will sit to one side. If you want to swap out the trebles, I would suggest using inline hooks.

I see, you basically when you reel it in the action of the lure won't work properly (blade won't spin right etc)

I have circle hooks on a few of my 1 oz lipless crankbaits. I have to use 2 split rings to get the hook pointing straight. But that is not a big deal. With the heavier lures, I've had issues with the fish throwing the baits. But since I've changed to the circle hooks, I have not lost any. Those hooks are almost impossible to throw.

I would say give it a try and see if you like it. You can always switch it back.

Also I want to point out that a lot of saltwater lures come with single hooks, so I don't see why the circle hooks won't work.
