what side do you fish from?

Featured Replies

I am going to put a sonar on the front of my tracker and I was undecided where.

Then I started thinking how I fish. I like to fish with the right side of my body facing the bow of the boat. So I prefer to cast of the Port side

What is everyones preference and where do you have your sonar mounted

i can do either the same. my graph is to the side of the trolling motor pedal.

I guess I would prefer to fish off the port side but I try and use the wind to my advantage everytime I fish so it then comes down to what type of structure/cover I'm fishing and what direction to hold the boat in order to give me my most effective presentation.  It could be one side or the other.  The best position would be right in the middle.  Mine is on the right side only because the previous owner(s) had them there and I didn't want to leave a bunch of open holes in the cap.

funny that you mention this, cause i just realized i always fish a lake clockwise, there by fishing off the port side.

About the only time I have a preference is when working close with a spinner bait, then I prefer the starboard side.   I'm keeping my rod tip down and pretty much just roll casting short distances about as fast as I can.  Doing this the trolling motor gets in the way when using the port side.

Oh, I guess I should also mention I'm left handed.

As for depth finder location, I always put mine off center on which ever side the trolling motor is on, which is usually the port side.  That way is the most out of the way, yet easily readable

I fish into the wind so I fish off either side.  My tmotor is on the port and my sonar is on the starboard.  I don't need to watch it all the time unless I am fishing in the cone then I am fishing off the bow.

never really thought about it because my finder is flush mounted in the middle....I normally fish into the wind so I could fish off either side depending on which way the wind is blowing.

I fish both sides, depending on which way my boat is facing and the direction I'm going in.  I have my sonor mounted to a RAM mount next to my trolling motor pedel and with the RAM I can swivel the sonor anyway so I can adjust it to my view.

I mounted the front sonar on my Tracker beside the navigation light fixture.

do you have a picture per chance?

Personal preference is the starboard side.  I fish most shorelines counter-clockwise but I have been known to differ from time to time.  My graph (which I use for depth only) is built in in the center.

My original unit was put on at the factory.  I have kept successive ones in the same place to keep from making more holes.
