New metanium mgl

Featured Replies

I'm picking one up Saturday, was wondering if anyone else got a hold of one yet, seeing if it's worth it over the old mgl and dc.

I only have the Chronarch MGL and could not be happier.  My decision was based on what I wanted versus what I needed.  I wanted the Metanium, but really did not need one.

Chronarch MGL

Do they have the slight rough feeling Curado 70's get after a while?

My Chronarch MGL is the 8.1:1 and going strong and is a little over three years old..  I keep the micro drive gear lubed with Shimano, or Cal's drag greases.  My two Curado 70's are 8.2:1 and over four years old.  Same lube on those drive gears and still very smooth.  I do my own reels.  All of those reels are still stock out of the box.  The Chronarch MGL weighs the same as the 70's at 6.5oz.

You won’t be disappointed!
i have a bunch of the older ones with upgraded gears and they are awesome.  That said the previous version can be had at a discount

I love the look of the last gen version over this one but that being said I'd rather the newest version for the new features.

I’ve had mine over a month now and it’s definitely worth it over the last mgl, I haven’t tried a metanium dc but I have used the Curado dc and the new metanium outcasts both of them. It’s a solid smooth reel, effortless to cast and it palms better then any reel I’ve had. I use mine for chatterbaits/spinnerbaits and it will bomb those lures.

I just picked mine up and man is it ever small! I like how deep the spool is but also how narrow they made it! Is your spool still a little tight even when with the drag backed off completely? Not like super tight be when I put my thumb on the empty spool and turn the handle with the drag backed off completely I still feel a little bit of resistance, not like a curado k when its completely free spool when its backed off completely

I’m not sure man I’ll have to check mine when I get a chance.

Just back off the spool tension knob and see how it feels after that....

Just opened her up and applied a little of shimanos drag grease, its functioning much better now

Man I have watched a ton of videos about that reel and everybody loves them! It’s definitely tempting.

I almost pulled the trigger on a 6.2:1 since that's all that was in stock, but I'm just going to hold out until the 7.1 or 8.1:1's are in stock. Came close to getting the DC instead, but the new specs on this one look even better at a lower price point.

All of my reels are Shimano’s, so naturally, I was excited when the 2020 Metanium came out. I have a couple of Bantams and I love them. The Metanium looked like a smaller, lighter Bantam. I have not found the new Metanium to be as long casting or forgiving as the old Metaniums I had. Has anyone else had this experience? I always use 2 brakes on, 2 off and side brake to 1 or 2. On the new Metaniums, I can’t seem to do that. I have to tinker with the tension to keep it from backlashing and casting distance is diminished.

It’s definitely a much faster, more free casting reel. I’ve been keeping the brakes noticeably higher than the old model.

I've had the opposite experience when it comes to casting distance, though. All it takes is a little flick and ZOOM, you’re there.
