Travel rod for multi purpose snook, redfish, trout, and other inshore species

Featured Replies

I will be going on a trip to Florida and am looking into a travel rod, but not sure what will suit my purposes the best while not breaking the bank. I have looked at the okuma nomad xpress and Citrix rids as well as tackle directs silver hook series.

The Okuma Citrix and Nomads are great rods - I have a few for swimbaits.

What power and action would you recommend

Depends a bit.  If you’re fishing generally open water, ML or M would be my choice based on bait size.  But you might need to step up to MH if you’ve got bigger fish, Mangroves, etc.

That'd be the question - what are you going to do with it? The H fits most of my FL bass fishing needs from 3/8 oz T-rigs to swimbaits up to 3 oz. Its not perfect at either end of those weights but it does it pretty well.

I'm going to be targeting snook jack and redfish from the beach and around docks and I'm gonna pair it with a 3000 spinning reel

I think you're at least in M, if not MH territory there.  A decent-sized jack will make you beg for mercy on a ML rig!  Not to mention you want to have some wiggle room in the event you hook an unintended species like a shark or tarpon.

Which brand reel are you gonna use?  There's a big difference between Shimano 3k and Daiwa 3k.  My 2 cents is that a Shimano 3k will not have enough line capacity for this purpose.

Living on the nature coast of Florida, I use a MH rod with a 3000 reel with 30 lb braid....
