kayak fishing DVL

Recommended Posts

does anyone on here fish DVL from a kayak? I fished it today for the first time. its a massive lake, and was extremely windy. I didnt catch anything, maybe the place is much different on a warm calm day, but the impression I got today due to its massive size was that to be able to fish any of the good spots you would need a boat with a motor, i mean theres no way im paddling all the way to the other side. So do any guys on here fish it from a kayak near the boat launch areas?

Been there in a private boat, and dvl rentals. No matter which rental boat you get, they are all slow, to get to the horse shoe dam, it takes forever and a day. In a yak, I'd fish around the boat launch, like the little cove to the right, and I think theres 2 on the left.

IMHO, a better place to fish with a yak would be lower Castaic..no motor's allowed, but it gets crazy crowded in the summer.

What about Perris..?

thanks for your advice. I was in that cove to the right so were several other people. Didnt see anyone else catch anything neither did anyone I spoke with. I think it was just too windy. Some guys came by in the boat rental, and were just getting slammed by huge waves it was nuts.

As for Perris, I rented a boat there a while back because I heard the water level rised and fishing was supposed to be good again. Water was the highest I had ever seen it, but the place was extremely crowded and high fishing pressure. Didnt catch anything, neither did anyone I spoke with, and staff told me its been a tough bite. Had a simliar scenario at irvine lake as well, minus the boat. Seems to be the theme here in socal at all the major lakes you gotta pay to enter, its a tough bite and crowded fishing. Beginning to realize that type of fishing just isnt my thing. I much rather hit the harbor in my kayak, or hike to a secluded creek or pond, than fish at something like irvine or santa ana river lakes for example. side note for perris, used to live there, back in the day the backside on bernasconi road was closed for years. you could park and hike in, staff rangers turned a blind eye to it. water level was real low back then, Fishing wasnt great but it was nice cause it was secluded, usually had the place to yourself or very few other people.

I think its just the wind for DVL as the place is supposed to be one of the best bass fishing places around so I am definitely gonna go back and try it a few more times.

Castaic is on my list as well, I really want to get out there.

Yeah, I went out with my friend once and only caught two small bass by the dam around island. I think lake Perris or pudding stone are way better than DVL for kayak.

Oh wait....

I think Canyon Lake is the best lol.

come around 4 tomorrow we can fish a few hours for bass and switch to crappie later.

If you don't have access to any of the "residential lakes" such as Lake Forest I or II, East Lake in Yorba Linda or the ones in Irvine, then become good friends with James (Bass_Fishing_SoCal).

The no wake area of Canyon Lake can be alot of fun in a kayak and you have alot of different options as far as types of water to fish.  It starts off with steep rocky walls just off the causeway and as you go back, there are points that fall into the old channel and some calm coves.  And boat docks galore, sharpen up on your skipping skills :).

Main lake has good fishing as well, but it is a bit tougher in a kayak with all of the water ski traffic.

Man I’m not sure if I should feel good about this, lol.
Actually, that was my intention too, to have fellow bass fishermen come in and enjoy bass fishing especially those new ones, because I know how tough it is to catch bass in city park lakes in SoCal. I have had a few visit, but recent year they change the rule “to have home owner with guest at all time while fishing” making it a lot harder.
Another thing is I change my interest a little, I target more of big bluegill and crappie with Ultralight gears these days and some how I lost track of where bass should be lol.

im friends with a guy who lives in irvine and we fish there. the problem with that place is the residents are very anal, they dont like fisherman, and are overly protective of the ducks. my buddy has a bunch of tattoos, we dont fit in with the yuppies and get association called on us everytime without fail in about 20 minutes. he shows his pass and they dont hassle us anymore. but there is always some angry old lady, typically walking her fufu dog, that has nothing better to do than "patrol" the lake. although fishing is allowed, they act as if its not, and like they own the lake, and try to enforce no fishing (which is allowed) themselves. we have had these angry old ladies come up screaming and yelling at us for fishing and demanding we show them our passes. We are negatively profiled/stereotyped by them every time we go. Although fishing is allowed, they try to act like its not. They are to the point of calling cops on children (that are residents) for fishing seen it with my own eyes. I dont understand why people behave this way. especially to kids. Like jeez lady, you got nothing better to do than hassle some children?!?!? Anyways, fishing there is really not enjoyable because of the way we are treated when we go. I can compare it to the undercover shopper following you around the store thinking your going to steal.

Take a look at this woman, demanding these kids release the bass...NOW! This type of behavior is common place.

Its really sad to see, as this is the lake i learned to fish on as a kid, i had relatives that lived there. I dont recall it being this way when we were kids. we would fish from the lagoon docks as kids and everywhere else your not allowed, and never got hassled. I know the best spots on the lake, they are from where your not allowed lol. Docks, gazebos, private docks, under decks, and the private grasses. We got away with it when we were kids. Now kids cant even fish from where they are allowed.

That big bluegill is great to see.  There used to be an issue with many of the bluegill being stunted, looks like that is a thing of the past.

There are still plenty of small bluegill. Start this and next couple months, there will be plenty of small bluegill by shallow and a lot of bass boiling on those bluegill (if weed still around, those Alum treatment really kill weed good last year). If you know any good spot for bluegill and crappie, please tell me. I found myself fishing same spot over and over and getting tired.

I thought kayaks weren't allowed at DVL. I have never seen any on the water.

Kayaks must be a minimum of 10' long, sit in no sit on top kayaks allowed. Kayaks must have and wear a PFD for each passenger.
