Accurate GPS points

I'm thinking ahead to winter now that we're getting most of our weed growth filled in. There's a few ponds with channels near me that are only 20 feet wide or so. They're very obvious now that the weed lines have established themselves and I was thinking it would be good to mark the edges for winter when I'm ice fishing. Do any of you recommend an app capable of saving GPS points? Given the small area I'm not sure if the hardware in a phone is really accurate enough to do this?

"Accurate GPS Waypoints": Few things come to mind that are more important than location.

All Sonar/GPS units are capable of 'onsite' saves, and onsite saves are far more valuable

than offsite saves. I should add, the best onsite wayponts are those based on

bottom contour rather than plant life. Points of rapid depth change make dynamite waypoints,

whereas weedline coordinates are subject to rapid and unexpected change.

For example, there are evergreen aquatic plants and there are deciduous aquatic plants

which shed their foliage every winter. In addition (and much to my surprise),

the species of plant on a holding site is subject to change from one year to the next!

One of the ponds I have in mind the weedline dropping off corresponds to the edge of an old channel very well. So the depth change and weed line are one in the same in the summer. Problem is the channel is only about 20 feet wide. Difficult to locate under the ice but clear as day in the summer. I'm looking for a way to mark the location of the edge on my phone so in the winter I can easily trace it with a string of tilts.

I understand.

Use a cellphone app with GPS capability or a handheld GPS unit like a Garmin handheld portable.

Position yourself directly on top of the drop-off (D/O as per bottom contour rather than weedline)

Now save those coordinates and you become dangerous

All in one offline maps. Is a nice phone app that that simulates a GPS you would use for hiking. It has Google maps, USGS maps, Bing maps, and more. You can save way points and even download map sections for use in no so friendly dead zones. This is all for free still. There looks to be a bunch of nice GPS apps for your phone, this was the only free one I could find most others are pretty expensive as far as apps go. Most were all 10 dollars plus. I never tried to put a waypoint on a part of the map that had water on it. Can't imagine it would matter.
