Daiwa Tatula CT "whirrrrrring" noise during retrieve

What makes a new set any better than the set thats in it? The reel is only a couple of months old, and hasn’t been fished much. Been greased several times (in attempt to quiet it).

It could be a difference in machining of the gears. The new set may be a couple thousandths in spec versus your current setup where they may be a few thousandths out. I had a similar issue with a Revo SX a couple months ago.

With the reputation of the Tats being noisy, it seems that hoping a new gear set will be quiet would be playing the lottery.

And yea, I returned one SX to BP already. It was bad. About like this CT.

My Revo SX side plate came off twice back to back And it wouldn’t retrieve after the second time. It grenaded two weeks after purchase brand new. BPS took it back no questions asked.

I remember reading about that.

I have two SXs and the side plate latches are really solid. It's just one of them was terribly geary. The guy at BP spun it once, threw it on the counter and went to get a new one no questions asked.

I wish I could do the same with the CT. That's one downside to saving a few bucks online.

It may have been poorly lubed from the factory or just a bad cut in gears.

I clean and re-lube reels before taking them out. But yes, one of my Coastals was bone dry when I got it. Interestingly enough, it's the one that is still fairly quiet.

It could be (and most likely is) poorly cut gears, but I doubt it is an isolated issue. Considering another member in this thread has a CT that sounds the same, I've had a Revo that sounds the same, and a Coastal that's starting to sound bad.  I MAY reluctantly throw $40 at it just as an experiment, but don't have high hopes.

If you open up your reels to clean and lube already, then you know it's about a 10 minute job to swap the gear and pinion from one Coastal to the other. You'll get an answer to your question quickly, or at least start the process of isolating the issue. A dry or funky frame side driveshaft bearing can feel like bad gear meshing. Btw, the gear set for the CT costs $23 if you order from directly from Daiwa.

I may do some swapping tonight.

I mean... here’s what I’m dealing with on the CT. (Touch of spool tension added to simulate a lure retrieve).

No way I can tune this out when I’m fishing.

None of my Daiwas sound like that.  I do not have a Tatula CT however.  I have a CT Type R, but again, doesn't sound like that upon retrieve.  Maybe I got lucky on all of my Daiwas?

Surely my luck isn't that bad.

3 out of the 5 reels (two Abu and three Daiwa) I've purchased in the last two months are geary.
