Brand new trolling motor is messed up!!

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a minn kota 50 lb transom mount. Beautiful day today so I took it out for the first test run. Well I launched the boat and by the time I got everything settled up I had drifted to the other side of the cove facing the shore. I put the motor in reverse and it shot me into the bank! Forward is reverse and vice versa. I couldn't believe it. I would guess the is some kind of crossed wire to the motor but I don't want to mess with it and void my warranty. Has anyone ever heard of this or know exactly what is wrong? If it's an easy fix, I might try it, if not, I'll take it to have it repaired but I'd hate to be without propulsion because the weather is going to be great this week. Somebody help!!

Check the wires going to the battery.  Red is positive, black is negative.

Nothing wrong with the motor, just operator error.

I have done this a few times. Like burley said make sure sure red goes to + and black to -

As already mentioned, you've probably fastened the Red wire on the negative (-) battery post and vice versa.  Or, if they do actually have the wires crossed internally, just reverse them on the battery.  Whatever works, right?  Or you could take it back and tell em you want a new one.

I hooked the battery connections up correctly, come on guys.....ha ha.... I took the top off today and they were crossed inside, switched 'em and we're good to go.

LOL. Don't take it personal, they are only insinuating that you may be human. I have made some incredibly "interesting" mistakes in my life and I am still young enough to probably make a lot more.

When I was moding my Jon, I bought a switch panel from BPS, brought it back hooked it up and nothing would work, went back, read the manual, according to the WORDS it was hooked up right. Then I carefully looked into the schematic on it in the appendix. They had messed up, there were black wires where the reds should have been and visa versa, so cringing, I hooked the red from my boats electrical to the black on the panel and black from the boat to the red.  Worked like a charm ever since. LOL.

Glad you got it figured out. I have a new Endura 50lb that is waiting for its maiden voyage this or next week (depending on when the circuit breaker for it gets in from Minn Kota).  I hope it has some better wiring than yours. LOL.

That happens more often than you know. It happened to me and a buddy a few years ago with a brand new 101lb thrust. My only guess is that the guys putting these things together aren't the brightest bulb in the box.

I know a guy that is an authorized dealer and repairs both..Minn Kota and Motorguides. He said he repairs Minn Kotas 15 to 1 over motorguides. He said the Motorguide tour series out performs any other trolling motor.
