2 Cycle Oil vs 2 Cycle Synthetic Oil

Featured Replies

I have an old outboard and have used regular 2 cycle oil for years. This year I'm thinking about using the 2 cycle synthetic oil. Does anyone see a problem switching ? I think the synthetic would be better. Want do you guys think ?

I use synthetic in everything but my DFI motor, for that I run manufactors recommended.

I would give it one serious decarbing first, since that's something most people don't seem to do and should be done every 50 hours.  Synthetics help keep carb buildup to a minimum.

I use Quicksilver Synthetic in my "84 Merc. and have seen a big difference in how much smoke I make.

Synthetic oil reduces wear alot better than conventional two stroke oil.  This as a result helps the motor have a longer lifespan.  Less smoke is a nice benefit.

I  run XD100 synthetic and find a cleaner burn and have been told that it will eventually clean up your motor. I've always used it partly because I hate to decarb.

Hey guys I just got my first OB motor.  So should I run just synthetic in it?  It is pritty much brand new i would say less then 10 hours on it.  Can I use any 2-stroke synthetic?

What do most you guys use for a carb cleaner?  I have stabil mixed in my tank now.  I heard about Sea Foam but can't find it any were.  How often should I use a carb cleaner?  Is it ok to always keep Stabil in my fuel?

100% synthetic + Sea Foam  :)

Sharkbite, sometimes dealers try to give you a lot of grief if you are not running the OEM recommended oil if you need warrenty work done.

As for generic synthetics, I've used Penzoil 100% Synthetic just about since they came out with it and have never had any oil related problems and the motors always look good when I tear them down. I just pulled one down I built four yeas ago for a guy that had almost 400 hours on it and he had never decarbed it. There was very little carbon on the piston and very little signs of wear. This was a motor modified to make over 300 hp and was turning 6,500 rpm most of it's life.

I also adding SeaFoam is a wise investment.  I run it in everything, even my fuel injected truck and van every few tank fulls.  You can get it at almost any parts store.

Ok Thank you I will keep in touch if I have any more questions.  What about Stabil as well?

I check auto zone,  walmart,  and advance auto for the sea foam and no luck.  Were do you get yours?

Ive seen it at all of those places. I got some from a marine dealership too.

All those places sell it around here.  I was in a little VW repair shop the other day and they even had it on their counter for sale.

Stabil is not the same stuff and I've never used it so can't comment on it.  Yes, SeaFoam also works as a fuel stabalizer but it does a whole lot more than just that.

Nobody I know has ever heard of Seafoam before. I haven't seen it anywhere around here. I use Star-Tron mainly and marine formula Sta-Bil in a pinch. Also , I use Penzoil synthetic in my 1967 80hp Evinrude Starflite IX with excelent results.     Happy fishing.

Ok I guess I give it a better look.  So how often should I use Sea Foam?  If I use Sea Foam I won't need Stabil then.

SeaFoam should be available in the Automotive Chemicals section of your local WalMart.  It comes in a 12 oz. can and should cost between $6-7 per can.

OK thanks guys.

So how about my other questions.  If I use Sea Foam do I need stabil?  If so can I run them at the same time?  How often do I use the Sea Foam?  Isn't it just a carb cleaner so I use it once in a while?

Sea Foam is all you will ever need, follow the directions on the back of the can, & it can be found at Wally World.

The Wal Marts around here do not stock Sea Foam, however, they do stock Star-Tron. I've been using it with no complaints.     Happy fishing.

I've never seen a Wally World here before.  So do I use sea foam in the gas always?
