Trolling motor constant power modification

Featured Replies

I have a recently obtained a 1993 Stratos 274 F/S.  The trolling motor that is mounted on it is an older evinrude that still works great.  The only thing I am not crazy about is that it seems there is no way to have constant power from the footswitch as the new foot pedals have.  In order to make the motor go I have to have my foot on the red button.  Honestly, I get tired of standing on one leg all the time when its windy.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this or better deal with it( other than replacing the entire motor setup)?  Thanks

If this is the same motor I used to have the on/off switch is a toggle switch. I believe the switch is a 3 way. Up on Middle off down constant. Try that and see if it works.

I use the same method as CFF suggests. It works well for trolling and dealing with the wind. However keep in mind that if you end up over the side while fishing alone, the boat will probably move away faster than you can swim. That is probably why they use the red button.  :-/

The only switch I have is a 12/24 switch for high and low power.  Otherwise, there is no on off.  The motor will work anytime the red button on the foot pedal is pressed.

If you are expecting to be able to have the motor run without your foot on the pedal, it ain't happening. There is no way to add steering friction to keep the motor from changing directions as they steer easily. I had 4 of those motors and am very familiar with their operation. You can add a constant ON toggle switch parallel with the toggle under the red button if you really want to---that toggle switch is a momentary function. The actual OFF position is the "O" on the 3 speed selection wheel.

edited--- Get a pro pole to reduce the fatigue and enjoy that motor while it lasts. Nobody makes a good, quiet motor like that anymore.

I have echoed Waynes praise of these motors before. If you ever want to sell it, keep me in mind. Those things are as close to bullet proof as you get in terms of trolling motors!!
