All around Swimbait Rod

Featured Replies

I am looking into a new all around swimbait rod. I’m trying to decide one that can throw something from 2-6 oz lures. I can throw the smaller swimbaits on a 7’4 heavy rod. The rod should be able to handle open hook and treble hooked bait. Again, basically everything.  I know it’s not common but I know they are out there. There are a couple rods I was looking into. The mega bass leviathan in the levante or the orochi. I also wanna try the 8’ heavy+ moderate-fast  Shimano expride. My budget is at max $310. I saw that the imx pro 8 heavy could throw lures rated 3-8 oz, so I wondered that if I got the expride 8 heavy +, I could throw bait in that range even if rated for a max of 3 oz. By the way what does heavy + mean? Is that like a magnum heavy?

If your budget is $300, why not just get one of each, Dobyn's 795 and 806, and have the proper tool for the job? A rod that can stick a Hud hook real well is going to lose you a bunch of fish on a glide, and vice versa

I have one of the Leviathan Omega Heavy swimbait rods, and it is perfect for what you are looking for. They have top notch build quality, and are incredibly well balanced. Their ratings are also spot on as far as the weights that they say they are good for.

I went with the Dobyns Fury line up and got the 806 and 795. I paired the 806 with TranX 400 and the 795 with a TranX 200. I really like each rod for its purpose. My buddy has the Champion 795 with the Tranx 300, if you were going to only get one I would get the 795 with a TranX 300 (I clear the spool with heavier baits on the 200). Having handled both the Fury and Champion I would buy the Fury again.

I'd look at some of the less expensive options and just get two rods.  If you search u can find 2 rods for the 310 budget.

Go with Teal's advice ^^^.  Rods that throw top hook baits well do not throw treble hook baits well and vice-versa.  You dont throw jigs on a crankbait rod.

What weight baits are you throwing with the 806 vs the 795? What is the heaviest bait you feel comfortable throwing with the 795?
